Should I be worried - strange phone call
Discussion
Just had a bizarre call on the landline.
Me - hello
Caller - hello mr Russ t bolt, have you had a good day
Me - yes thanks, who's calling
He then ended the call.
tried 1471 and got ' we do not have the number ' message.
Should I be worried someone was trying to confirm the number to me, if so what could they do with the info ?

Who even has a landline in 2017?
We don't use it, but it comes with broadband, and is a complete waste of nearly £20 a month. Thanks for everybody's response. If the worse case is loads of calls I can live with that, if I need to protect my bank accounts that is a major ball ache.

I never answer any call where I don't recognise the number. Put the number into Google and there's websites like "whocalledme" etc and it will tell you who it was , usually ppi etc.

Then block it
- Use this. However for the OP there is an alternative which is even better and won't cost a dime or a single second of his time.Russ T Bolt said:

Why have you got a telephone instrument plugged into a line you don't use? I too have a landline which I only use for broadband. If I really have a wish/need to make an outgoing call on that line I simply plug in a old battered handset I have had for years and then disconnect it afterwards. Works a treat.

There was something in the news the other day which was quite similar.

Not wanting to scare you and I'm sure it's nonsense.

I think you've got a prank call from a new prank call app that's doing the rounds. I've had three calls from random numbers and when I google the numbers that's what come up. Apparently some get a call with a bloke asking them to stop using his wifi (lol). So yeah, I wouldn't be alarmed, just your number is in a dodgey database somewhere...

Checking to see if the name corresponded with the number. Now they know its active it will now be sold to hundreds of other companies and your phone will be ringing non stop.
doubt it - name is irrelevant if they are data mining they will be keen its an active number but will not go to the expensive of having someone sitting on the other end of the phone to do it when it can be automated by a dialler.suspect it was more a case of a cold call that dropped.
