This sign is just along the road from Newcastle airport,a triangular warning sign with a red border and an exclamation mark on it and a plate below with the words 'red squirrels' on it.
So what about 'red squirrels' then?,i assume that it might mean there are red squirrels in the nearby trees,so why would passing vehicles need to be aware of that? are red squirrels known for hurling rocks at passing vehicles or something? confused

I think the idea might be to not run them over as they're a little bit rare.

Run as many grey ones over as you can but no red ones please. The red squirrel is endangered and is the indigenous one, the grey squirrel is a foreign invader.

I know a grey one plus squashing equals red but they are not the same.

Squirrels I can kind of understand. If you're aware they might be about, you might adjust your driving style accordingly as you might see them.
My road has a warning about frogs however...

Good spot. Love an interesting sign!

I'd be aware of the red tailed rodents but what I'd be really watching out for is other drivers slamming on to save one of the pesky buggers.
