This could be in 'roads' or could be here (due to the already excessive and still increasing use of enforcement against drivers):

Very interesting read and reflects my own feelings about traffic control causing congestion, un-costed policy decisions and implementation of road layouts / speed limits, anti-car dogma etc

Won't happen.

There are many 4 way junctions controlled by traffic lights which seemingly turn red when you approach them.

I'm told through the grape vine it's to slow vehicles down. But it seems wasteful to me

But won't stop it from happening....

Free market think tank concludes we should have less regulation.

Who'd have guessed they would.

It'd be great if these lunatics were listened too just once - you could do it in North London say, leave the lights turned off for a week and then ask people (potentially people who'd been stuck in the same jam for 6 days by that point) if they'd like the lights turned back on.

It isn't particularly unusual for traffic flow to improve when traffic lights are out of action and replaced with give way signs. This is part of the purpose of roundabouts after all. And that's without considering cases where the lights are set up to cause congestion.

Obviously nobody is suggesting that all traffic lights are abandoned, but by their very nature they do waste road space because every so often there is an opportunity to cross the junction but the vehicle waiting isn't allowed to use it.

In sunny Southend, it seems like every "improvement" makes things worse.

The seafront has been sort of semi pedestrianised with a 20 limit and specs average speed cameras. It was fine as it was, well it seemed ok for me as a runner and a driver as it was anyway.

They removed a roundabout at Victoria Circus and put in a new road system and traffic lights. Now I often have to sit through 2 or 3 traffic light cycles at 7pm on a Tuesday evening. It should be plain sailing at that time of night.

The roundabout at Cuckoo Corner isn't really big enough, so they altered it and pus some filter lanes in. Great! Then they put traffic lights on there too and it is now worse than it was before. Same at the Tesco roundabout. Both of these one didn't need to stop off peak. You do now.

Problem is that people can't be trusted to use roundabouts- they crash into one another, hence the lights: http://content.tfl.gov.uk/signalsatroundabouts-tra...

There's always a balance between speed / time and safety.

But many roundabouts could be without traffic control. Or perhaps only have traffic control during peak times.

I agree that some roundabouts are better without lights. A local major roundabout near me is always much more free flowing when the lights are out.

But, roundabouts with lights only at peak times seem a liability. There's a couple in Swindon that I sometimes drive through for work. So many people seem to not check if the lights are in operation and race out into the roundabout without looking. Idiot drivers don't seem to cope very well with the part time lights.

This ^^^^^^

Early every morning I take the dog for a walk, part of my route takes me to the main road at the bottom of the estate (traffic light controlled junction). Main road is a 40 limit, side road is quiet as it's just to get on/off the estate. Surely the lights for the main road would stay green and only go red if someone approaches from the side road? No, all lights are red, and won't change to green until a vehicle on the main road has virtually come to a stop banghead

Trouble is some people are obviously aware the side junction is quiet, so on a few occasions I've seen people fly through a red light there yikes
