It seems to me an app based on the normal speed camera locations could automatically work out the average speed within zones and give you a realtime readout. I'm sure I waste a lot of time in these zones where I could be going 70-80 in a 50 to regain the lost mphs spent in traffic.

Is there any such app available yet?

Yes it's called the speedo in your car. Just stick to 50. If you slowed down a little due to traffic. Speeding up to 70 for 1/4 of a mile or so will gain you seconds. Then you get to watch all the other cars sticking to 50 laughing as they catch you up at the next batch of traffic or lights.

Do they not take a measurement between two cameras situated subsequent to each other, not necessarily the first and last in a long line of cameras?

Can be between any number of cameras in a set section. Not necessarily adjacent

Depending on your car, the OBC may have an average speed function, which I find works quite well.

I use the A40 regularly in the average speed zone, and depending on the sequencing of the various traffic lights, its possible to do 50-55, whilst still keeping to the average of 40.

Does that make any actual difference?

Thought about writing one a few years back, but then just decided to set my cruise control and save myself a load of hair.

Yes, you have no idea which of the many cameras you are being timed between. That's kinda the point.

Despite the fact that nobody ever seems to be working in these zones when I drive through, it is done for safety so I wouldn't feel comfortable 'making up time' by speeding - narrow lanes, workforce in the road, concrete walls, no margin for error.

But as long as you are keeping at the average speed between each set of cameras, then it doesn't matter which cameras are timing you, since you wont be over the average anyway.

Therefore, it makes no practical difference.

Can you explain how that works when you're slowed down to 40 for a while?

You're definitely not the target audience for the app. Although I'm unsure as to why you felt the need to reply.

So you'd need your average speed reading to automatically reset after every camera? I'll stick to my speedo.

TomTom's iOS Speed Cameras app (and I assume the fully fledged sat nav app) do this already. They're not overly cheap but not extortionate either.

An even more useful feature is the way average speed zones are presented. Instead of just telling you to keep below the limit, Speed Cameras keeps track of your current average within the zone. So if you do end up accidentally going too fast at any point, you can peg your speed back enough to keep the average legal. For very long average zones, this will be very handy indeed.

Yes, I simply press the reset button on the indicator stalk, at I pass the camera. Takes no effort at all.

my TomTom 6100 does this automatically - alerts me when I enter an avg speed zone and displays a live updating measure of my avg speed in that zone

Well it's not entirely scientific, but if I've been slower than 50 for a while, I know that it won't matter if I edge a little bit higher sometimes to overtake a wagon or something.

Was driving through some at night recently (no roadworks going on of course) and noticed that not a single one was lit up "infrared" so presumably none were turned on. Tad annoying if no roadworks and none switched on but need to maintain 50 or so just in case.

It's almost as though people don't bother reading the thread before they reply. coffee

As I and others have already stated, TomTom has an app that does exactly this. It's also available on Android.
