Named Driver - Rear Ended
Discussion
Not sure if this is the right section for this, but here goes anyway.
I was rear ended this morning.
I was sat behind two cars at a red light, the light went to green and we move off. From the junction to the left a police car approaches with his blues and twos on. I slowed, nearly stopping to let the police car out and whammy!
Great timing from the chap behind, he had been tailgating me for a few miles too. We have both been breathalyzed and passed. We had to wait for the sergeant to come out as its classed as a police involved RTC. I was sent on my way but told that the other chap was being detained for a drugs test, slurring his speech apparently, and I may be contacted toady for a statement.
Nothing too bad, awful bang though, the car doesn't seem to need too much, maybe new bumper, as it has split. All the panel gaps seem fine and the boot opens and closes fine too.
What has got me a little confused is that I was driving my wife's car. I am a named driver on her policy, however I also have 3rd party cover on my own policy. I have all of the other chaps details and a pretty good witness. The question is, who's insurance do I need to inform, my own or my wife's?

Either really but makes sense to do it via your wifes as that policy is actually on the vehicle.
<nods> I suspect that the DOC policy will say "Nope, there's a policy ahead of us in the queue", and refuse the claim.TooMany2cvs said:

I'd be approaching the insurer of the guy who hit you directly, in my experience they will bend over backwards to help you and give hire cars etc.

Yet another jump in error TM2CVs. The OP is insured as a named driver on his wife's car, no one has mentioned DOC.

The whole point of this thread is the OP asking if he claims on wife's insurance of his own DOC extension.....isn't it??

My immediate thought was:1) Notify your wife's insurer now that the insured vehicle has been involved in an accident;
2) Notify your insurer at renewal that you have been involved in an accident;
If in doubt as to what should be declared and when, check the wording of the policies.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry missed a bit out. I'm named driver on my wife's policy, with fully comp
The wife's insurance have been all over this like a tramp on chips! Courtesy cars, garages, repairs, personal injury etc. But the other chaps insurance have just rang and said I'm better off letting them deal with it as it won't be classed as a clam. They said if I still have the car I can let my wife's insurance know that I'm using the other party's insurance, and that I'm just informing them of the accident.
Next question, who's trying it on, whos going to be the better choice.
After looking at the car this afternoon, I'm not so sure about its condition, boot won't close without a good slam and is dented along the bottom edge,, the bumper is ruined (parking sensors too) and the lights look like they have been pushed in. On a £4-5k 10 year old Car that is quite rare, low mileage and just had £350 spent on MOT service and a few new parts on Friday!

Out of the two options my advice would be to let your wife's insurance company (more likely their preferred accident management company) drive the claim. The third party insurers will probably want you to use their approved repairer who is probably being paid a pittance to repair your car and you are not contractually connected to them. If your car is a write off (which doesn't sound like it is) then best to get an independent engineer to inspect your car to put a value on it.
Make sure that you pick the repairing garage.

HiGenuine question would what you have said apply both ways regarding what repairers are being paid. If the op was the one who rear ended someone would the same not apply

Sure, that's why I added "make sure you choose the repairing garage". Just tell the comp insurers who you want to use and leave it up to them to authorise the repairs. The reason I say better to let own insurers authorise repairs is they are less likely to argue (too much) the repair costs with the repairers as they are likely to get the full cost of repair back from the at-fault insurer anyway. Better for the OP that his chosen repairers get a decent days pay for a decent days work.
