Assuming you do it all safely and have permission from the landowner to burn stuff in the place you do the burning etc. would it be legal to dispose of your cherished old banger using some fuel and a match?

I seem to remember reading something about needing to be registered to scrap cars, I imagine this would amount to the same thing.

Any ideas?

Google says arson unless you have the correct permits to do so. Could also be done for all sorts of generic anti pollution stuff or causing a disturbance type offenses.

So probably not worth bothering with.

What if it happened 'accidentally'?

I seem to recall that the burning of the wiring insulation leads to the production of hydrofluric acid, which is not a good thing.

Edit / Although that would appear to be an urban myth...

No.

a. it's illegal to burn hazardous waste
b. you won't get the Certificate of Destruction to legally register the vehicle as scrapped

I thought a Viking funeral involved a boat?

Should be ok if you point it at France and give it a good shove.

Years ago I worked in a small workshop on a farm. One Monday we came in to find someone had dumped an old shed of an Escort in the yard; no note, no messages, nothing.
After a month the farmer decided he wanted it gone, so dropped the car on its side in a skip using his tractor, then torched it.
We all went out to watch the pyre, and the guys in the next unit decided that the car burning wasn't enough, so in went a calor gas bottle and a half full fuel can.
Things got a bit noisy, then the fire brigade showed up and put it out.
I don't know the details, but the farmer ended up with a fine and we all got told no more burning stuff on site.

Seems pretty simple:
1. Run down the local scrapy(s), explain what you plan to do for whatever reasons you have
2. Drop said scrapy £20-50 and tell him the pickup location
3. Have your party
4. Have the scrappy pick up the burnt out motor and give you a salvage certificate 2-3 days later
5. Profit.

It's only (potentially) illegal if you get caught.

Edit: actually knowing some scrappies some of them might even let you do it on their premises if you drop them a few quid, saves them the trip. Asking wouldn't do any harm.

Depending on how much of a fire you want, I have seen cars being "sold" to the fire dept for them to chop up, then they pass them on to the scrappie. Maybe a half viking service, so they can come rushing in and chop up a half burnt out old banger that has served you well?

On a related note, assuming you have the appropriate land and a FAC or SGC, it is legal to shoot up your car before taking it (probably on a trailer by that stage) to the wreckers?

Sounds like the 70s apart from the fine

Set fire to it on top of a cliff and push it while flaming into the sea. At night. In an overseas country where that kind of thing is permissible, of course. And post on the Web.
