bought an xtron andriod satnav unit for the mrs BMW last april

Never worked properly - several issues - contacted retailer at the time who sent generic meh is-it-all-pugged-in response

Been a little busy but want to sort this now - emailed retailer in hope of resolving/replacement/send back for evaluation etc but 1 week and no reply - is it too late to seek recourse via paypal?

Almost a year old and now thinking of trying to get it replaced? A tad late don't you think?

I appreciate that, been a bit distracted, simple fact remains it's been supplied faulty (whatever difference that makes - its still under 12 months) and I'm not a fan of chucking £300 in the bin so wot-r-moi-rights duhhh.

happy to work with retailer to resolve and return it etc but if they're going to ignore me also happy to go chargeback & difficult on them

I appreciate the opportunity to underline the perceived failings of people on the internet is simply irresistable to those who admire themselves enough but if anyone who knows the paypay/ebay routine in these circumstance can tell me whether its worth pursuing or not worth the hassle that'd be grand

Neither Ebay or Paypal will be interested due to the length of time since it was bought.
You may have some consumer rights directly with the seller, I don't know, but certainly not with PayPal or Ebay.

Apologies, just when I buy cheap crap from ebay I tend to work on the basis that the chances of getting a faulty item sorted are next to zero, and if its nearly a year then they are even less.

Ebay refund policy seems to work on a 30 day deadline, but they don't say much about faulty items. IIRC Paypal just follow ebay rules

Ebay refund process, 30 days to advise seller, further 30 days to advise ebay

TBF spending ITRO £300 for a 7" android device - while not exactly the upper echelons of aspiration - one has a right to expect it to work a few basic functions reliably. The samsung tablet I use for satnav in the van works pretty much flawlessly and whats the difference, less a battery and 4G antenna and plus an amp, GUI and a fancy plastic case? If I had the time to fart about I'd build a 7" tablet into the dash myself so can't see why an off-the-shelf item should be remarkably worse.

Anyway I think I've got my answer.

From 'Which?':
http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/ive-...

Ebay Money Back Guarantee policy:
'The Money Back Guarantee policy covers any problems reported to Ebay within the first 30 days of receiving your goods. This has been reduced from the previous 45 days under the Buyer Protection policy.'

PayPal Buyer Protection
'A dispute must be opened within 180 days of payment, but certain items aren’t covered, such as motorbikes and cars.
If you and the seller can’t resolve the dispute, the dispute must be escalated to a claim within 20 days of lodging the dispute.'

More in the link which you'll need to look at for yourself.

Yep, I'd expect it to work for £300. But if I was a retailer I'd also expect you to return it in a reasonable timescale too.

If it is a software glitch you might be able to flash it with different firmware. I don't know these particular units, but I'd bet you can find someone somewhere on a forum who has reflashed one with an alternative android image.

Thanks, the thought had occurred to me as it seems most of the E46 specific android units all share the same origins and they can't all be this pants. Faults range from non working aux/USB leads, connecting to phone via wifi being a PITA, and the unit just freezing after a couple of hours, all of which I assume could be software issues? Any idea where to start enquiring?

Why not just buy a satnav instead? Much cheaper and does the same job.

Contact the manufacturer directly, see if they will help you get it working.

android app satnav is always up to date, no laughably expensive map updates, live traffic & road closure etc info, integrated music/phone, clean install.

If the tablet has a Mediatek chipset that will be the problem. The amount of cheap android phones i have seen using that chipset with gps issues is almost 100%. Issue's include taking ages to get a lock on the current position, then when moving showing your position in a completely different area /across fields etcdriving

Ebay buyer protection would give you returns up to 30 days but at this point you've got no protection unfortunately...
As eBay sellers we would usually offer some concession with a problem at this timescale, but it sounds like your seller is a bit of a fly by night.

Garmin kit does all of that with lifetime free map updates...

Indeed, anyway you can buy a shed load of map updates with the money you save buying the satnav in the first place,

OP, unfortunately you are unlikely to get anywhere with the seller.

Have a look on forum.xda-developers.com & the wiki (https://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Generic_Android_Head_Unit), try & work out what 'type' of headunit you have, & see if any known fixes exist for your issues.
I have a similar (i.e. chinese unbranded android) unit & it's brilliant, although did require effort on my part to not only research thoroughly beforehand but also fix some known issues & set up the interface to exactly how I wanted it (standard Android device stuff though). I could never go back to using anything else, including all the 'latest' tech offered by OEM's

I've bought plenty of generic brand stuff off eBay - you take the chance that it won't be as good as a branded unit.

I get that you can be busy, and not get around to responding, but it does sound like the retailer engaged in 1st line resolution (it's not hard to believe that a fair amount of issues are operator error). Leaving it 11 months is a bit too long to be 'busy', unless you've been living on an island with Wilson.

As previously mentioned though, it's 45 days to request a return on eBay, or 6 months to open a case via PayPal.
