On the face of it yes they can do it as they are not unilaterally changing your terms.

Seems a bit run that they employed new staff without asking the incumbents.

This reflects the bad side of zero hours contracts.

There's a clue in the name of zero hour contracts.

Zero hours per week promised or guaranteed, from either side.

If you're not up for what shifts you're offered, that's cool. If they don't need you, that's cool.

They want rid of you.
Hard to know why with this little info, but they've hired new people on much better terms than their existing staff to do work currently being done by their existing staff.
What the point is in all of this I don't know. But you're right to feel confused by it. I certainly would be.
Probably best to be looking about for something new if this is the way they go about things.

Quite what the point is in all of this I don't know. But you're right to feel confused by it. I certainly would be.
The reason is the employer wants rid of the flexibility given to staff on zero hour contracts, as they have been left short on short notice one too many times. It's nothing to do with quality of work just the fact that a few members have been exercising their rights worth a zero hour contract that's pissed off management.

Hire full time staff, give zero hours bare minimum and they either lump it or leave.

Like I said for about half of us me included it's a bit of a middle finger but won't be too much of an issue, but there are some who are solely reliant on the work at this place.

Way off. I don't really want to give the info out of the employer as I don't really want this thread finding it's way to my bosses.

If I was to say the type of employer (I. E. Supermarket) and you knew my city you'd be able to narrow it down to one of two institutions. If you guess please keep it to yourself!
Then maybe you should take down this thread.

Its pretty obvious what you do and where from your profile (unless that info is incorrect).

Balls I forgot my details where on my profile! I'll just delete the OP, that'll do it. And the post above.
