Hello,
I'm looking at buying an old mondeo estate for towing.
I passed my test just over 10 years ago. With that in mind will I be legally able to?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

No, you won't. You would've had to pass your test in 1996 or earlier to have that included.

You'll have to do a B+E test to gain that entitlement. I've done it, it's not difficult. Costs of instructors vary quite a bit area to area so I can't guide you too much on that. I think the test was £120 when I did it a few years ago

Am I not right in thinking as long as the trailer and vehicle doesn't exceed 3500kg I'm ok?

My local B+E course is over £1000 😱

It's a little more complex than that and it's based on MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass?) rather than the combined weight at that very moment, as I understand it

As I understand it, it is the total train weight, but you need to consider the MAM of the trailer, rather than its actual weight. So if the trailer has an MAM of 1600, and the mondeo has a boot full of kit and a passenger or two you will probably exceed the limit, even if the trailer is empty or lightly loaded. (Correct me if I'm wrong PH!)

Hence why I did my + E test, just to be sure. Think it was circa £200, which included a day's training. Not hard.

There is a thread running on this very subject where it is all explained in detail. I don't have it to hand but a search should find it.
Off the top of my head, if you don't have B+E, it's all based on MAM's, with a total limit of 3,500 kg.
If you do have B+E, it's based on actual weights.

GVW of Mondeo = ???? kgs
MAM of trailer = ???? kgs
Total of both = ???? kgs - if more than 3500 then B+E licence needed

The way round it is to do the maths and re plate the MAM on your trailer to bring your total train MAM down below that limit. there should be an engraved plate somewhere with it.
