There is a car parked on our street which to all intents and purposes has been abandoned.

It hasn't moved for months - has flat tyres and someone smashed the back windscreen a month ago (the glass is still on the road behind the car).

It has been reported to the council whose response so far has been that as it is taxed and MOT'd all they can do is write to the owner (who incidentally rents a house in the street but further up so they don't see the car from their front window) and ask them what they intend to do.

Is there anything I can do to try and speed things along (other than torching it which is tempting but not realistic).

There doesn't appear to be a way for me to check if it's insured which might give me a way to put pressure on the council.

I am going to contact the relevant councillors for our ward to see if they can move things along.

Any way I can find out the letting agent to contact them about the fact the tenant has an unroadworthy car parked on the street.

Umm, what's it got to do with them? Does the tenancy say he can't?

If you know where the owner lives, why don't you have a word with him or her? Far easier than all this on-line sleuthing and writing to third parties.

So askmid seems to be fine if it's my car or I have been involved in an accident with the car but not otherwise.

I have no idea what their tenancy agreement says but I would hope any good landlord would want to know if their tenant was causing issues for other residents.

For those asking about talking to the owner - they have been asked to move it and have clearly ignored that request. The first complaint about the car wasn't from a resident but from someone who uses the station outside which the car is dumped.

You can use Askmid to look up the insurance status of any car. It asks you to verify that you own the car, of course, but I don't imagine that's ever stopped anyone.

Given you are unable to jump the moral hurdle of a small fib to AskMID, then a pool of diesel suddenly sppearing under the car, and the police being informed of that, or the car magically dragging itself a few yards onto double yellows, or the white line in the middle of the road seems unlikely to have anything to do with you.

If they've been asked, and ignored the request, then moaning at public services is unlikely to help you. Positive action, or stop worrying about it biggrin

There was a reply to a similar problem some months ago that cracked me up...it was something like;

'Call the police and tell them a couple of bearded men have left a car and left quickly talking about meeting at Alans Snack Bar or something'

Slightly off topic but does anyone know where you can buy the 'POLICE AWARE' stickers, got a few mates who think quite highly of the piece of st they drive and it would be a good laugh.

saw similar asked on here recently. for a forum full of motoring enthusiasts not many seem to know people involved in various aspects of the trade.
my answer would be phone a mate with a recovery truck and have him weigh it in.

You could always mock up some A4 sized labels with "suspected drug vehicle - do not touch" and apply a few...

I'm guessing it would get more attention if it were to be found somehow dragged away from the kerb and I to the road blocking it?

As the back window is smashed, whoever did such an irresponsible thing could also pop the hazards or parking lights on to avoid any major collisions.

This is, of course, alcohol fuelled advice
