Do they show on the back of your license? Or do they only show the conviction codes on the paper part ?

They appear on the website. Where you have to get a code to share you license with hire car companies etc.

This is the correct answer. They can be looked up online by anyone who needs to know.

Not disagreeing with you as I don't know the actual answer, but I recently had to get a code to share my licence details for a driving day and had to enter my driving licence number, national insurance number and postcode. So presumably the "anyone who needs to know" would have to know those details?

No, you apply for the code online and share the code with the hire car company who use it to look at your record.

But you can only get the code online if you enter your NI and driving licence no, so unless you have widely share those nobody else can access your details online.

The "anybody who needs to know" can then only access your details if you give them the access code which is only valid for a limited time.

Exactly, you acquire the code at home, and take it with you to the car hire place, they then access your record using the DL number and the access code. Simples.

Yes, but you need a NI and licence no to access the system to get the code to take to the car hire place so not just anybody can access your info online unless you allow them to wink

As an aside - why is the driving company interested in that? You either have a license or you don't, I was not aware that you could not rent a certain car if you had points.

I hire cars every week with work. The week they scrapped the paper part and the licence codes went online is the only time I have been asked for a code.

I suppose it will be at the hire companies discretion whether they rent you one of their cars or not. The code could let them see if you have been disqualified before or not, aswell as any normal points on licence for speeding. I suppose it gives them an idea of who they are dealing with.

I wonder depending on licence history could they refuse you the waiver option for insurance, or use it as an excuse to charge extra.

I think alot of countries outwith Europe won't be aware of a need for a code anyway. I hired 2 cars in Australia this year with different hire companies. Neither asked for a code to see my driving licence history and were happy just to see my licence.

I've hired cars all over Europe since the dvla code thing came out. Never needed the code, usually they haven't a clue why I'm giving them the printout but i still get it just in case.
Physical licence always checked though.

Foreign hire companies don't know or care about UK endorsements because it doesn't affect them, they only need to see a licence as this, to them, means you are legal to drive.

The obsession with 'compliance' and petty points is very much a UK thing...
