Stories like this pop up now and again and the answer is the same, put it in neutral and it will slow down on its own.

Auto? wont shift into neutral? If you are that scared ram the thing into neutral.

I thought a blocked DPF reduced the power. Something stinks here and it is not just the exhaust.

If you can't manage to stop a manual car from accelerating away on its own then it's natural selection. The guy is a bullstter.

Yup

Brakes can easily overcome an engines power, especially in a higher gear. Failing that just take it out of gear.

No, he "didn't want to brake in case it took the back end out."

He is either lying, or is so stupid that he shouldn't be allowed to take charge of a motor vehicle.

If regeneration's been cancelled by turning the engine off too many times, the sump will have filled with fuel, and the oil level would have been very high. Then it'll start running on that... "Running like a tractor" after it stalled. So it stopped because it ran out of "fuel" - the contents of the sump...

Basically, just the usual modern diesel that's only been pootled. Is it 64-plate behind the blurring? So he's not long bought it used, probably ex-lease. Pics look like it's on a Vx forecourt, prob from AutoTrader. Bet it was a premium because it's "low mileage"...

Oh, yeh. Other papers haven't blurred the plate.

I reckon some of the owners hair gel got sucked into the air intake and the engine ran away on that.

Must remember not to use the brake in case I lose my back end too.

I'm in two minds.

I've had a few runaways in my time, normally turbos going but a couple of others.

The initial shock does hit you and cold brakes sometimes aren't mega effective.

With me it's trying to keep RPM down so 5th/6th and clutch up and hope it doesn't rip the clutch plate out and in an auto try and brake hard.

But I could easily stop the car if I wanted by neutral.

However I can totally see members of the public panicking and doing all sorts of stupid things.

Why does anyone believe a dramatic attention and click attracting story in the Daily Fail (or most of the other papers, for that matter)?

If I saw was pointed at a story in the Fail, Excess, or wherever saying that the sun was going to rise in the east tomorrow, I'd be tempted to get up early and check for myself...

Newspapers are there to make money, and lurid, over the top, writing sells copies/generates ad views as needed. That's been the case since newspapers started, and probably will be as long as there is a human race to read them.

Thing is, any bloke that not only has an instagram overlay extra bit of hair as a fringe, but can't work out pressing the brake / clutch is probably just testing natural selection.

Just dip the clutch

My thoughts! He's ragged the hell out of it and blown it up then came up with this elaborate story to have it fixed under warranty

You keep trying to tell us you know all the details, do you have funny looking hair and sleeve tattoos by any chance?

If the engine ran away on a manual transmission car you'd have to be retarded to be unable to stop it, this story absolutely stinks. More likely he got flashed by a camera and decided to cane it for a mile or so to try to add credence to a bullst story.

I know nothing like everybody else, but that doesn't stop posters making up their own theories like you have just done hehe

If ever I end up in court in front of a jury I will request that no members of PH are sitting on it wink

I've also had a good old sneer at this prize plum already this morning.

Not only that, he spent 20 grand on an astra diesel
