Insurance due Tuesday - renewal already taken grrrr
Discussion
My insurance is due for renewal on Tuesday and checking my account today it seems that the well known company have already taken payment on Saturday. I had set aside Monday to search for a better price as their renewal price was pretty cheeky.
Anyone had this before. When I inevitably find a better price and cancel how much of pain are they going to be in getting my money back. I assume it is some sort of continual cover nonsense dressed up as customer service.

Happened to me...exact same situation but I had no one else to blame but myself because I didn't read the small print that this would happen if I didn't tell them not to renew.Anyone had this before. I found cheaper elsewhere, cancelled the day before renewal and got a refund within three working days. No drama.

You may well not need to cancel. There's really no need for people to get their knickers in a twist about auto-renewal. I think it's a great safety-net. If you get your arse into gear and get some alternative quotes, then call and say you don't want to auto-renew they'll generally (but not always, so don't lie about the quotes you've had!) turn themselves inside out to keep your business.
Or insure with a better company. I've found on our main two cars with LV= I can't beat the renewal quote (using companies I've heard of) even going to LV= as a new customer.

On another thread, someone will be blaming the insurer because they thought their policy would auto renew and it didn't and now they've been done for no insurance. When will people take some responsibility? You could have opted out of auto renewal when you took the policy out but you clearly didn't. You would of had plenty of warnings about upcoming renewal. The Ts&Cs which you probably never read, would have explained the process and that payment would be taken a few days in advance.
But hey, it's all their fault.
Anybody who leaves it until the day before their insurance is due for renewal to find an alternative quote, and then complain because their existing company assumes they want to continue because they haven't been told otherwise, needs to get themselves better organised, and thank their existing company for making sure they continue to be insured.

Exact same happened to my OH about 3 weeks ago. The insurers took the renewal cost 10 days before the policy actually lapsed! Her own fault, she didn't read the small print.
Luckily she found a quote £140 cheaper than renewal, rang her current insurer and they actually beat the quote by £5 and issued her an immediate refund for the difference.

Think of it this way.
Policy renewal on the 6th.
Insurance company try to take your money on 6th.
Money isn't there.
They try but can't get hold of you.
= no insurance.
The credit card I use changed provider and something in the system couldn't cope with that but LV renewed anyway and sent me a letter asking me to give them a call to pay.Policy renewal on the 6th.

It would be better if they had said sorry but we are unable to match that quote or get anywhere near it.Luckily she found a quote £140 cheaper than renewal, rang her current insurer and they actually beat the quote by £5 and issued her an immediate refund for the difference.
You wouldn't feel they had tried to rip you off then.
Reading some of the replies, It does seem to make sense in the broader scheme of things to minimise the % of uninsured drivers rolling about - it's just unnerving to see such a large chunk of money leave early. As for questioning my organisational skills, I have a day off work on Monday so had put it on my to do list for then so it certainly wasn't something I had forgotten.

I think it should be up to us. If we want to go for auto renewal than that is taken on the last day it would need to clear payment but a quick repay when it is wrong or not needed.Having had an auto renewal that I had cancelled in good time, still take the money then took a month for refund, I hate the idea.
Cheeky gets, admin error. Oopsy, please have this letter as an apology whilst we hand on to your £300 and get interest.
I have often sorted insurance a day or two before.

It says alot about the insurance industry though when I wasn't surprised in the slightest. You wouldn't feel they had tried to rip you off then.
They rip drivers off, we know this. Years ago I needed business cover, extra £90 on top of current policy, fine. Came to renewal and no longer needed so told them expecting to drop by £90... Nope, they wanted £80 extra now to remove business! Allegedly because driving to a fixed location regularly can make you complacent... They didn't get my business again!

And if the money isn't there and the payment doesn't go thru, it leaves them with precious little time to warn you that you have no insurance. And then people would be on here moaning that the money should be taken a week before so if there's any problem with payment, you have time to rectify it without being left uninsured.Let's be honest, it's insurance, and this is PH. If they auto renew, it's a con. If they don't auto renew, it's a con, and if they give me a year's free insurance, it's a con, I should have got 2 years free.
They can do nothing right, and everything they do is a con.

The random-ness of insurance costs is puzzling. One of my daughters added business use midway through a policy and they refunded her £15. And that was with Admiral, who aren't known for missing an opportunity to take your money.Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
