New average speed camera zone - M40 J1 westbound

Returned from holiday to note that the start stretch of the M40 now has average speed cameras (50mph zone) with signs citing 'For safety reasons' to a few gantries past the M25 exit. There's no roadworks, so what safety reasons are there then?

Too slow idiots who bundle down L4 as fast as they can then swing into L1/2 for the M25. Plus the oldies doing 50 swinging out in to L3 because they want to stay on the M40.

Seems a semi-sensible safety based idea to me.

Unsurprised really. There's been a "temporary" 50mph avg speed enforcement on the top 7 miles of the M3 for about 6 years now.

And with the introduction of this "intelligent" motorway I fully expect that limit to suddently become the permenant limit all the way down to at least Basingstoke when it's switched on...
