Gatso speed cameras.
Discussion
Hi, just wondering if anybody has any knowledge of Gatso camera's and how they work.
I have received an NIP from Merseyside Police stating I was doing 60mph in a 50mph zone on the M62, just before you enter Liverpool. Going to the Isle of Man TT on my bike. I have had one picture sent to me as I asked for it and it shows three motorcycles all in the inside lane and all of us are on the ground markings, I am the last bike of three. I have asked the Police to provide the second picture, as I am non to sure if it was my bike that activated the camera or not and to explain the workings of the Gatso, but so far they have not replied to me.
Does anybody know the workings of the Gatso system and how does the camera differentiate from one vehicle complying with the speed limit and another vehicle speeding be it in the same lane or one of the other two.
Cheers

The Gatso has a narrow radar that crosses the road at an angle. When a vehicle passes through the beam at a speed above the trigger speed 2 images are taken either 0.3, 0.5 or 0.7s apart. These are used to calculate the average speed between the 2 pictures.
Because the first image is taken only a few thousandths of a second after the vehicle has been measured it is a simple issue to know which vehicle in a group of vehicles triggered the camera because the vehicle appears where the radar crosses the road.
The police will know which vehicle to check and may indeed have checked them all. They have certainly checked yours it would seem.

PMB has resurfaced it seems. The system can tell about speed without two photos, BUT you need both to see if you were speeding. Forget his bluff and bluster. In your case I'd be asking for both photos, and if I remember correctly, the presence of a second vehicle ( legal bods, please correct me), throws doubt on the accuracy of the readings.
I see the OP has not indicated whether he thinks he was over the limit or not, but by rights without helpful cooperation from the police, the only way he might get to see both photos is by turning down the fixed penalty offer and the potential offer of a Speed Awareness Course, and opting to go to court.
The poster presently using the ID of TABLECLOTH has probably already used the information in the OPs profile to go and look up the offence and check the photographs, so the OP needs to be fairly certain whether he was speeding or not before committing to court proceedings.
Persuading drivers to take a SAC and avoid points is not unlike election candidates offering incentives to voters... known as TREATING... except that treating is illegal, while offering SACs is not, and the OP can take advantage of Merseyside's generosity, safe in the knowledge that some of the course fee is helping pay for the cameras that identified him as speeding.
A new name for nearly each post!!

Well at least WE all know who he is while he goes through this latest identity crisis, and uses up lots of potential IDs for new PHers...
It is the same person who snooped through PH posts and managed to find somebody who incriminated himself in a post, then had him prosecuted, but then BRAGGED about what he had done on PH, thereby warning off other posters by letting everybody know what he was doing!
He also paid for a membership on SafeSpeed so that he could snoop in the members lounge, and got found out.
Any worthwhile sleuth would have kept quiet so that they could catch more people in the same manner.

It seems that PMB et al have taken to recycling all their old IDs - 4040vision has since 28th April become Radiobirt, Rollmeup, Tabletoz, AtlanticX, Tracker22, Tile222, Gosgo, Radstrut, Satlink, Matruk, Bohostyle, and Tablecloth to name but one!A new name for nearly each post!!

If that is true, surely it is breach of forum Rule 19? - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/rules.asp - in which case what are the admins going to do about it?A new name for nearly each post!!

I believe that he has also posted atleast two misleading/lying posts on pepipoo concerning camera trigger tolerances on motorways, one was about the the M5 if I remember correctly. A new name for nearly each post!!

Well, we have a few posters who have several logons and try and pretend they are someone else every other week because they suffer from some sort of identity crisis or perhaps get upset when their preaching becomes tiresome and we call them out.i'm missing so much because of work changing

The lazier/less intelligent ones don't even bother registering new logons, they just go into their profile and change their username.
This particular one (tablecloth aka 4040vision etc. etc.) probably doesn't even realise you can click on their posting history and look back at all the different names they've used, hence making their attempt to hide behind a different identity quite futile.
Why they do it? I suspect they don't have much else to do with their time and are a bit lonely.

He/she is just changing the name in their profile, so not technically breaking that rule.Having read through those rules though, there must be multiple contraventions many times every day for some of them and nothing much seems to be done.

cheers for explaining it, seems much the same happens on facebook in some pages. The lazier/less intelligent ones don't even bother registering new logons, they just go into their profile and change their username.

what an odd hobby!
Other posters who recognise his style will tell you that "man with 50000 names", finds it a very rewarding hobby. But carefull about puling him up- he's been known to send letters on Official letter heads to web site owners, when his work is exposed. ( Possible answer to one question posed in a previous thread).

He was banned from UKPoliceOnline for using multiple log ins, so it's not like he doesn't have form for it elsewhere!
Hi Guys and Girls,
Thank you for all the replies and advice, I have managed to obtain both photo's of my alleged offence and from the road markings I have obtained proper advice and I was speeding, so its £100 and 3 points.
Cant help but think its just a money making machine for the Police/Government, don't mind speed enforcement outside schools, OAP homes, accident black spots etc, but 60 in a 50 on a motorway when the ACPO guideline (discretionary by the force) give you 10% plus 2 mph, so if I was doing 57mph I maybe would have got away with it, but getting done for 3 MPH over just seems a bit harsh.
Can't comment on the other remarks, think someone maybe posting advice etc on here but using numerous ID's.

You weren't going 3mph over the limit, you were going 10mph over the limit. Their discretion is just that, they could set it at a firm 50mph but choose not to and if they let people slide at 60mph then why not 61mph or 62 mph or 65mph or 70mph etc. Thank you for all the replies and advice, I have managed to obtain both photo's of my alleged offence and from the road markings I have obtained proper advice and I was speeding, so its £100 and 3 points.

Merseyside Police's own guidelines show that a Speed Awareness Course could have been offered (up to 64mph in a 50mph zone LINK) but for some reason your offence must not have met their criteria to offer such a course.
It may well be a money making machine but if everyone stuck to the posted limits for each and every road then the speed cameras would be a complete waste of money and there would be none of them around - in this case the person helping to pay for their upkeep and justify their existence in the location you were snapped in is ... you

Of course if everyone stuck to the speed limits there would be no prosecutions - 10/10 for stating the blatantly obvious - but perhaps if the speed limits were more appropriate fewer people would choose to exceed them. Is it not possible that a law that is ignored regularly and often by so many people - many (most?) of whom wouldn't think of breaking any other law intentionally - is just a bad law?
