Long drive from Co. Clare to Dublin Port early Saturday morning. Saw the Garda camera van lurking in the dark on the side of the M50 too late. Fortunately was slowing down anyway so think I was probably doing about 68-70 in a 60 (100km/h) zone. Didn't appear to be going significantly faster than the couple of cars around me, but of course I would say that wouldn't I evil

Anyone with any recent experience of speeding in the ROI, threshold speeds and vigour with which UK reg'd vehicles are pursued? I am anticipating the usual demand for the e-toll penalty soon enough but hopefully will not get a speeding fine either, I have read in old threads that any points are not enforceable on a UK license so assuming this still applies? I will (happily rolleyes) pay any fine forthcoming but have again read some older threads saying ignore it, I am guessing this is bad advice these days and will result in a visit from the 'can't pay take it away' crew laugh...

Couple of takeaways for me, This year was the first time I've seen a camera van in the ROI even in a city, been holidaying in ROI for many years. As usual saw no Garda traffic presence out 'in the sticks'. Secondly, there did not appear to be any coverage within the ROI at all for speed/mobile camera POI locations installed as part of a 'European' speed camera update file (Peugeot SMEG+ Sat Nav unit), not sure if this is the same with other Manufacturers or the stand alone units?

The above mentioned link might help and the quote below which I found on the website

Gov UK Website said:
Penalty Points
When driving in Ireland you’ll be subjected to Ireland’s driving penalty points system, a system designed to save lives and prevent injuries resulting from road crashes and collisions. When driving in Ireland on a foreign driving licence, your details will be held on a separate database for the purpose of recording driving penalty points. If you later obtain an Irish driving licence, any previously acquired penalty points will be activated on that licence.

Thanks, confirms the points aspect. OH is going to get an Irish passport at some point but doubt I will bother trying get an Irish license now biggrin

Guess I'll wait for a couple of weeks and if nothing shows up on the doormat I'll consider myself off the hook.....(or not).

I've seen them lurking on the wide single carriageways near Donegal a few times, one time was late at night past 10pm.

They are crafty.

On my 2016 survey in ROI (n=1).... The average traffic Garda love dropping a fine or three for unwitnessed locally alleged bad driving. I believe my core crime was UK plates.

Doubt it. There's plenty of local lads driving around on UK plated cars. UK plates don't signify much.
