Police measuring speed from a bridge
Discussion
This morning on the A10 approaching the roadworks I noticed a chap standing on a bridge that crossed the carriageway. He was wearing a high-viz jacket and appeared to have a radar gun in his hand. His car was unmarked too (blue Mondeo). I was probably doing 47/48 in the 40mph zone approaching the roadworks.
My question is, is it possible for me to be prosecuted via this method?

Why does the OP feel that because he was "done" (we don't actually know if it was even a spped camera) from a bridge it is any different from the side of the road?
Because I've never come across a member of the police force measuring speed from a bridge.Edited by offspring86 on Friday 16th June 13:37

Yes you could get an NIP in the post. No requirement to stop the driver at the roadside. Some mobie handheld devices these days have cameras in built to record the offence too.
We have these in Hampshire.

Great, thanks for the information! We have these in Hampshire.

Very common in Cheshire - I got caught once, although he was standing off to the side, wearing dark clothing and with his back to trees and with the evening sun behind them so he was invisible from a distance. I was bowling along the deserted motorway standard A road at 85.I've since seen them under the same bridge in the shadow of it, and standing in the centre wearing hi-viz. Even that is sneaky - the green hi-viz didn't stand out against the overcast sky.
If you were at a true 46 or higher then you'll likely be getting a letter.

Increasingly, on Motorway/A-roads I'm driving to the speed limit these days, its just not worth the risk of sitting at 80mph + anymore, even when conditions permit.
Yep, me too. I've driven 30K/yr for quite a few years and until recently the only time I'd been done was getting knabbed by an unmarked car in N Wales some years ago. However the way I was caught by the cop on the bridge shook me a bit as, other than not exceeding the limit, there's no way I could have avoided that. They can check your speed at 1km.Loads of colleagues down South have been done on roads like the M40 and A34 and all at very marginal speeds. So driving at low 80's is a bit daft - you might as well drop to an indicated 80, or a shade below if you're nervous, and you'll be OK. Or go properly fast and make getting caught worthwhile.
I saw some odd behaviour a few days ago and this thread's making me more nervous than I was earlier. Essentially I noticed a grey Octavia (I think) on an over-bridge on my side of the carriageway on the A1 about 700 yards away. I slowed down at this point to something more approximating the speed limit. Immediately after I'd done this, said car reversed along the bridge to being over the other carriageway, and it certainly seemed to me as if it was also changing the side of the road over the carriageway it was on.
At the time I thought a possible scenario was it was police looking out for a car that it wanted to follow, and as it was obvious some random speeder had clocked it from my driving, it moved to be in a more subtle place - had it been out to get speeders, I assumed, it would have come after me. However, I've now looked this over-bridge up on the map and there's no "works only" slip roads of the kind it would need for this to make sense, and if it's common for police to be taking speeder reg numbers and not pursuing....
Don't even know if it was police, but pretty bad feeling I've been got here.

A quick update for you all. I've had nothing sent through to me so I assume it was either a member of the public or if it was a police officer he wasn't measuring speed at that time. Either way, lesson learned and I'm paying more attention to my speed!
Or even that you were clocked but not deemed to be being naughty enough to warrant any further action
It happens from time to time, and sadly these days you need to keep an eye on the speedo as often as you do your mirrors.
