Amnesty for knives that are unsuitable on the street would seem to me, at the present moment in time, to be a good idea.

Getting the message over that we shouldn't have knives on the street & having quite strong sentencing backing that up after the amnesty, to me seems like a smart thing to do.

I can't see there ever being a good reason for having a great big Knife with serated edges in a public place, perhaps there is?

Some people (not me) may take a different view. I.e. If we are going to be attacked by people with knives I am going to carry one for self defence.

What happens if you're stalking a Sheila and she bends over in the shallows of a creek to splash water on her face and a great big dirty salty springs his ambush on her? You'd be properly helpless then without your great big knife.

Or, if you are walking your Sheila back home after a night out and someone pulls out a small knife and demands you hand over your wallet? you can pull out your massive blade and say to the mugger "now THAT'S a knife!"

As someone who has been stabbed before and hence is willing to admit knife crime is a subject close to my heart, do I think that an amnesty would do anything?

No

People who carry knives with the intention if using them dont use the knives you picture to be targeted in this amnesty. They use either £2 carpet knives for slashing or a £3 ASDA kitchen knife in a cardboard and duct tape sheath. Both instantly disposable.

Another well meaning but completely out of touch with reality idea.

I think there should be an amnesty for anything sharp we might have in our pockets & also our boot laces. That way we couldn't possibly harm anyone including our selves.

The knives being used to injure and kill in London at the moment are bloody big. They're certainly not carpet knives.

The only way you will stop this is by making the penalty for carrying them so severe it's just not worth it. No namby pamby light sentences or warning. Minimum 10 years inside mandatory.

Fortunately cars are all going keyless so one less pointy object people might need to carry.

Wouldn't that make it more severe than carrying lets say, a shotgun?

I am in agreement there should be stiffer penalties, or at least the laws and sentencing that are available now, shoud be used properly.

From what I understand, you wouldn't automatically go to jail if it was discovered that you had an illegal gun, let alone a knife!

When the ban on "Samurai swords" was made that had no affect on slashing or stabbing crime figures. It was done to satisfy perceived public outrage.
Now you are not allowed to buy a curved bladed sword of a certain length, however all others are ok to purchase. Crazy law making that doesn't do a thing.

The knives used in the London attacks were ceramic coloured kitchen knives. Very sharp and easy to obtain. It is thought they chose ceramic to fool any metal detectors.

It's a nice statue and a good message but the last two sentences of that article must make us look like a bunch of idiots to the rest of the world!

"Temporary Superintendent Simon Wanless said: 'South Yorkshire Police have not been requested to supply any knives for the sculpture that is being built.
'However, we would be happy to supply seized knives from our store if we were contacted and provided a plan on how the knives would be safely transported and stored.'

They are knives, they aren't toxic or explosive, and its not like terrorists would try and hijack a job lot of used knives .

My suggestion would be to put them in a box of some sort and put the box in a van of some sort and then store them bloody anywhere...

In my opinion they should both carry very severe prison terms. There both leathal weapons and have next to no reason for carrying about in public.

Utterly pointless.

Anyone who carries a knife and would happily use it (ie the people we DON'T want to have knives) aren't gonna use the amnesty.

IMO, and I'm happy to be proved wrong, these initiatives are just PR stunts.

This is a subject that particularly irks me. I can't legally (easily, anyway) carry my leatherman because it has a locking blade, but your common scumbag who carrys a knife fully prepared and wiling to use as a weapon, will carry it without hesitation.

A hammer, screwdriver, wine bottle, bike lock and magazine can all be lethal weapons too. I agree with the shotgun, they have specific uses that do not normally require them to be carried in public places without prior planning.

Why not start equating knife crime with terrorism? Sadly, we have excellent recent examples of terrorists using knives. Surely some of the youth gangs will not want to be associated with religious extremists?

I'd considered carrying a Jif lemon or something equally painful to the eyes apart from my fingers.
