Simple question - do insurance companies pay out if a car is stolen when the person has gained entry by opening a 'unsecure window'

What am I looking for? It's an online policy and doesn't help much.

Hmm I'm not sure if they will as technically you've not kept keys safe ?

I have checked my whole policy. It mentions nothing about loss stolen or anything just information on breakdown, windscreen repair and accidents number etc.

The keys weren't anywhere near the door or anything but the window wasn't securely locked. They have climbed through the window. Stole my wife's bag with the keys in it. And gone.

I'm hoping the car is found but panicking about the policy now.

Was this a car window, or a house window?

Exclusions of that nature should be pretty obvious in the policy. I have a memory that my policy has some wording about locking up the car when unattended/filling with fuel or some such.

There's the keys thing. But also what does 'protect from loss or damage' mean?

3. Care of your car
You or any person covered by the policy must:
- protect your car from loss or damage
- make sure your car is roadworthy
- allow us to inspect your car at any reasonable time we ask
- always take the keys out of the ignition and remove them completely when your car is
left unattended. You must lock all doors and close all windows and sun-roofs

What you're looking for is wording around 'keeping the car keys secure'.

Your house insurance will likely not cover anything stolen because your house was not secure.

Your car insurance may or may not have specific policy wording around the keys, and your care of them.

Id just tell them they gained access by forcing the window open. Its not a lie, they used some force to open the window wider.
