Long story short - due to delays from VW for a new car ordered, they have provided with an old shape Tiguan until the actual car gets made and delivered.

Diesel, automatic, cruise control, spacious, etc - all the things needed for a decent road trip. Which got me thinking, trip to France would be alright.

Now we are both under 25 and so VW said that they could only put Her Indoors on the cars insurance, nobody else under 25, as the car ordered is actually hers.

My question is - would it be possible to 3rd party insure the car with me on it? Just for maybe a week? And would there be any implications on any insurance about driving abroad?

Thanks in advance

You would need the V5 from VW and written permission to take the car abroad and you would probably have to show that you have full recovery if anything happened to the car.
Can't advise you on the insurance you need to talk to a broker

You will most probably find there is a clause in the loan/hire agreement saying the car must be insured on a fully comprehensive basis at all times. And why on earth would you take the risk insuring a £20k + car third party unless you're minted?! redface

So many issues here.

You'd be driving without the owners permission.

You would need permission from VW (there's a form for people leasing) to take the car abroad.

I think when you say "third-party" you are referring to "another insurer" rather than e.g. TPF+T policy - because insuring somebody else's £20k+ car third-party only seems inherently risky.

Short answer is "no, you can't". You could always go back to VW (or whoever supplied the car) and ask them if they're ok with it, as they're the only people who can tell you that. As with any lease / courtesy car, it's not yours to do with as you please.

Thanks for the replies Gents - seemed a good idea. Honestly didn't realise there'd be too many issues so it looks like a job for SkyScanner! Thanks again beer

Why not just ask VW? Surely an impassioned plea along the lines of "we were planning to go abroad, but your delays have left us in a hired car - solve my problem for me" should be enough?

You're not asking for the impossible - it's just requires a bit of action on VW's side.

Any loan car I have had has had the stipulation that it was not insured for anyone to go abroad.

In other words - you can't even take the car abroad.

Bit of a can of worms, but did she have a car before that she still has insurance suspended on? Maybe you could put the Tiguan on that? But you'd still need permission to take it abroad.

Off-topic, but have VW messed up and caused the delay? My missus needed a car urgently a couple of years and funnily enough ordered a Tiguan. Dealer said it would be 4-6 weeks, but probably quicker. I asked if it was delayed beyond that could they supply a loaner and got a flat "no". In practice the car arrived at the dealer 8 days after we ordered it.

But it is up to the owner of the car; ie. VW, as they have in this case - this issue is additional insurance.

Unlikely VW themselves would still have old model Tiguans.

I imagine if it's a dealer car they'll refuse due to the mileage, even if insurance could be sorted out.

Hi thanks for reply, the old insurer she cancelled as this hadn't crossed our minds at the time to be honest. Will ask VW for permission.

Yes its entirely VW fault, she was expecting her car mid July and never heard anything from them and was monitoring the online tracker thing to see no movement. She rang them early July saying whats happening and they said looking at November time. So she demanded courtesy car as was literally expecting delivery week after so sold her old one.

8 days after you ordered? This one is brand new, I'm assuming that was used? Also they've 'recently' released the mk2 model and I think they are proving extremely popular so maybe that has something to do with the delay.

Yes, as mentioned above VW have left her entirely stranded with no car and so given her a car at no cost at all (just add fuel) until her new one arrives. Feel a little cheeky asking for extras but I suppose if you don't buy a ticket...! Will put a call through to VW

What you are asking for will not cost them anything, just paperwork.

Entirely likely that VWFS have a bunch, freshly off lease.

No, it was new, towards the end of the previous model. They were starting to get a bit iffy on lead-times - I guess as they wound down production. It was only orderable with the 150PS diesel engine. We picked one from those already built, waiting at port to be shipped, but it was a colour we were happy with and had the options we wanted. The uncertainty was that once it's in the shipping process it can be a few days or 6 weeks - the dealers can't influence it.

Monitoring a couple of Tiguan forums, it seems that 6mths+ is pretty standard on the new model for a factory order car, although there are cars kicking around in stock if people are flexible about spec. The R-Line, particularly, they got into all sorts of problems with, but apparently it's better now. I did see somewhere else that there's now a shortage of the 1.4TSi petrol engine.

I'm amazed VW (or the dealer) supplied a loaner though, especially for such a long period of time. They did a while ago when there was a big shortage of diesel engines, but I think only for company car drivers.

Ah I see, well I suppose if its more or less the spec you wanted then 8 days is brilliant. They offered her a couple in the showroom instead but didn't want them as wrong colour/spec. Yes it's the 1.4 TSI engine so maybe that's the problem!
She works mobile and needs a car. I think we would have been fine with the 6 month wait or even a 9 month wait, its just when they said 3 month and they never got in touch to say its been delayed.
