Trundling home yesterday afternoon northbound up the M1 and was met with slow traffic 40 advisories around 4.30pm. Took about 20 mins to get through the stop start traffic until reaching this bridge where upon a speed camera van was pointed towards the south bound traffic. Once past the bridge traffic began to move and it was obvious that a concertina effect of someone braking for the camera van had caused several miles of queues and resulting delays.

Not withstanding the fact it was annoying, you would have thought there was little point in having a bridge cam on stretch of motorway so congested that 70+ was unlikely. It's the first time I've seen a camera on the M1 so just wondering if it's usual along there. if so might go the M40 instead.

My guess, not speed but ANPR. catching the bad boys.

Yes that one's pretty normal there.

The van is typically parked on the "pavement" of the roundabout of Junction 14 which as you say is a bit odd as typically it's heavily congested in rush hour. Definitely speed enforcement though as it's marked up as such.

It was battenberged up but no other markings as such, no camera stickers or "aarrive Alive" for example. As I went under the bridge i could see the side window open much like a camera van.

They're on the back wink

The rear windows are also normally open too, you'll see them if you go around the roundabout.

I've seen him there, 'watching' the M1 Southbound. Easy to be running a bit over the limit there outside the rush hour.

Speed camera vans can have ANPR too. He could've just been doing ANPR work.

He was parked facing away from me so I could see the back. No Police on it either.

Be aware that the bottom end of the M40 (J11 - J1) has several locations where camera vans sit, too.

I wasn't fussed about the camera (am in my commuting car which barely does 70) more the fact the stupid locations cause traffic jams.

And if they hid the cameras so you never knew they were there catching people, you'd be complaining about that not being right!

They're damned if they do - And damned if they don't!

Wouldn't expect much sympathy for camera vans unless it is ANPR.

I was going southbound and went through it at an indicated 80-85, so I have a nervous couple of weeks. Only the second time I've seen them on that stretch in the last two years (always in rush hour). Good job I go a different way if I'm on the bike really.
