Audi paying for parts just out of warranty

A few years back now but I had an Audi A3, 3.2L on which the timing chain tensioner failed at around 4 years old/50k miles so well out of warranty.
I took it to the dealer I had bought it (new) from and had all servicing done by, they quoted £1600 for the repair (15 hrs labour plus parts) after some discussion they did it for £400 including the (due) inspection service plus they provided me with a courtesy car for the repair time.
Now I know the tensioner was a known issue on these engines and I'm not sure how much of the goodwill was down to the dealer or Audi UK but I thought they did me OK given that the service would have been close to £400 by itself.

Goodwill can be a bit of a mess. VW/Skoda now empower the dealerships to offer Goodwill, I assume this will be the case for Audi too.
I had an inlet manifold fail on my 2011 Octavia vRS about a year outside of warranty. I had a full set of Skoda main dealership stamps in my book and in the end I received around 50% off the part and around 40% off the labour - cannot remember the full bill.
I took the issue to Skoda directly who just told me that it was down to the dealership and they "wouldn't get involved". It was an annoyance for me as the Inlet Manifold has no service schedule, so is certainly designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle and it failing is a known issue - to the point where in the US the exact same part now has a 10year/100k mile warranty on it. However Skoda themselves wouldn't budge and I had to do all my negotiating with my local main dealer.

My best mate is workshop controller for an Audi dealership. The stories he tells about goodwill and warranty has me amazed. The percentage of warranty jobs that go through the workshop is 60%! There are a lot of common faults. Look at the forums, and find out if the lamda sensor is a known problem. If you are aware of a common problem, and show the dealership you are aware, they will pay for most of the cost to repair.

My dad has a 59 plate A4 1.8t, it was using excessive oil probably down to him always laboring the engine in high gears & generally not knowing what 'mechanical sympathy' means. Full Audi history though. Got a new engine FOC a few months ago, I was flabbergasted.
Can't blame this on you're Dad, unfortunately/fortunately. The 1.8t was a bit of a drinker. A very large batch running over a couple of years production had this problem. New engine was the only fix.Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
