had a look at the .gov.uk site which is as clear as mud as well as trawling here and various other places.

looking to tow a box trailer with a vivaro combi which has a rated towing capacity of 2000kg a plated gross combination of 5020kg a gross vehicle weight of 3020kg and a kerb weight of 1842kg

now I have a b licence only (passed after 1997) so a couple of questions If I can

firstly if I go do a b +e test can I tow a combined train weight of up to 5000kg or am I still limited 3500kg maximum combination weight?

on my b only what can I tow and does the trailer need to be plated?
if I tow a small unbraked/unplated box trailer can I just run about quite happily with that as long as I keep the trailer under 750kg?

thoughts appreciated guys and girls

Probably better asked in the stickied thread at the top of this forum.

As previously mentioned most is covered in the sticky but I passed my b+e and stated on my licence is I can now 'drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats and a driver with a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg'.

So once you pass your b+e test you will have no problem towing that combination. On your B licence only, its the MAM of the vehicle plus the maximum plated weight of the trailer (actual weights don't mean anything). So its a total MAM of 3500kg combined (car and trailer) unless you using a vehicle with a MAM of 3500kg you can then tow a Trailer with a maximum weight of 750kg.

You will find it hard with B licence only to tow anything other then a small trailer especially with a Van as they normally have a decent payload so have large MAM.

This is the description for B licence only

'You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats and a driver (with a trailer up to 750kg). You can also tow heavier trailers if the total weight of vehicle and trailer isn’t more than 3,500kg MAM. Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles. Able-bodied drivers can no longer ride motor tricycles with a provisional category B licence'

B licence with a vehicle GVW of 3020 means max trailer plated weight of 750kg

BE licence max actual weight which can be towed is 2000kg so if the trailer is plated at say 3500 and weighs 1000 empty then it can be loaded with 1000
