I often see a speed camera van in a location near me which has no signs whatsoever.

It's a 30mph zone. So is he training or something or are the signs optional these days?

In my county the signs are scattered on all the main A roads, they are fixed to the lamp posts permanently

They tend to be bi lingual in Wales

Yes we also have the fixed signs in a lot of places. But this particular place has no signs anywhere near it.

What signs are you expecting to see and why?

Signs have always been optional by the way.

That is so loaded I can smell the gunpowder.

If only driving safely and legally were as inextricably linked as you are implying, it would be so simple.

They aren't.

I am never bothered about speed cameras because I choose not to speed and become a financial volunteer, yet I manage to make good progress

They set their traps where they can catch the unfortunate. Perhaps a person in an unfamiliar area or where signage can be missed. Near me they sit with the sun behind them where traffic speeds up to merge into a dual carriage way. Most people will speed up to make the fast and safe merge but these highwaymen expect you to exceed 40 mph. Kerching. It's a scam and there haven't been deaths there.

Do you mean there are no signs warning of the possible presence of the van or that the van itself is unmarked with nothing to show it's a camera van? We have plenty of camera vans in North Yorkshire and there are never any signs to warn you they might be around; however, I don't recall seeing one that wasn't marked-up clearly as being a Police camera van.

So you think 70mph on a deserted dual carriageway constitutes good progress and have experts who sit beside you to confirm that belief? Out of interest what qualifies these individuals as "experts" - not members of the great I AM by any chance?

For obvious reasons they can't say it in public but I suspect those same drivers would admit privately that (say) 80mph on a deserted dual carriageway isn't a problem and hence they'd be highly unlikely to issue a NIP to someone doing that speed unless there were other aggravating circumstances. A mobile van on the other hand....
