Can I invoice someone for sending me unwanted mail ?
Discussion
One of my former suppliers ( I cancelled my account with them a couple of years ago) keeps sending me invoices, statements, and varying levels of demands for payment.
Each time they do it, I query it and it eventually turns out that there has been a mistake at a local branch somewhere in the country and they've allocated someone else's purchase to my account number.
It has happened almost every month for the last two years. I've phoned them, written to them and emailed them, it always gets sorted out eventually but then a few weeks later it happens again.
It has always been my view that if someone is annoying me, I should hit them where it hurts to make them stop so I'm thinking of advising them of my charges for dealing with unsolicited mail then hitting them with an invoice for every letter they send me from now on.
Possible? Legal? Likely to get a result?

Write to them demanding they remove all your details from all their records. Also tell them that if they fail to do you will report them to the Information Commissioner.
If they still do it, then do report them and then they'll be forced to or have to pay a fine.
Your invoice they can just ignore (highly unlikely you're going to enforce it for non-payment)

Maybe covered by this legislation? Citizens Advice Bureau might be able to confirm.
