Does car have to be insured?
Discussion
As above, my father passed away in June, renewal for his insurance came shortly after so I rang to cancel it. The car is fully taxed (not SORN) till the new year, parked off the road. I've had a letter from askMID saying it needs to be SORN or insured and the DVLA need to informed. I don't want to SORN it as I will be driving it to my local WBAC at some point which my insurance will cover me for, third party. I've still got the V5. Any ideas?

Also be aware that when you declare SORN, the tax will be cancelled and only whole unused months will be refunded.
With this in mind (and not only to keep the CIE hounds at bay), you might want to SORN before the end of this month.
If it's uninsured, he needs to sorn it asap, to avoid further action being taken. With this in mind (and not only to keep the CIE hounds at bay), you might want to SORN before the end of this month.

Thought that went without saying.JZZ30 said:
Your Driving Other Cars extension (if that's what you mean by your insurer will cover third party) likely requires that the car is covered by a policy in its own right.
Maybe, maybe not.Paul Dishman said:
Adding the car to your own insurance policy for a day to take it to WBAC will probably be done at nominal cost if you explain the circumstances to the insurance company
And it won't make any difference with the tax-or-SORN question. The law changed in 2011 - continuous insurance means that ALL taxed cars need to be on MID as being insured. No insurance, SORN it. End of. That simple.

Mine doesn't. But it wouldn't allow me to drive a car I'd inherited, because it's mine, and my DOC doesn't cover my own cars. wolfracesonic said:

Has probate been granted yet?It is not your problem is it?
There is something weird relating to taxing a car whilst in probate. I don't think the executor can tax or SORN it, it's just stuck in a perpetual state until the DVLA get notified of a change of keeper, who can then tax or SORN it as usual. I might not be totally right there, best for the OP (assuming he's executor) to phone the DVLA and ask. But I know we had a similar scenario with one of my recently deceased uncle's cars, although that was SORN at the time of his death, so it maybe just that a SORNed vehicle can't be taxed while in the name of the deceased.

A good friend of mine died this year and his daughter sold me his car while probate was still ongoing. The process was just the same, she even phoned DVLA just to make sure. I had the V5C/2 and taxed it online, she sent off the V5 to DVLA and got a tax refund,I got the new V5 in my name. I suppose the only problem would be if the car was mentioned in the will.
