Surely crossings have detectors to avoid blanket lengthening of the green man timeframe: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-41010020
It will cause many issues during rush hour....

Cheers for that, our local council are trying to remove a brilliant cycle and footbridge and replace it with FOUR Toucan crossings on a busy roundabout rolleyes

I'm quick on my feet but have noticed I'm in a definite minority when i get to a crossing and stop because i know i won't get across in time. Invariably it's the scallies, chavs and "I'm so important that the world stops while i check Facebook in the road" people who flout this unwritten rule as they swagger/shuffle into the road. Oldies don't seem so eager.

Seriously?

It's always old people when I'm driving. Especially the really infirm ones who shuffle along at a slug's pace.

They should only be allowed to walk on one side of the road....

I don't get this - the crossings in my town take ages to stop beeping and change back to the red man already, it causes all sorts of disruption when its busy and as a driver, you spend most of the time staring at an empty crossing on red.

Annoyingly too, the sensors only seem to trigger the lights to change when they see a big gap in traffic. You can then usually cross safely anyway without needing the lights to change.

Not seen many here, but the Spanish haave agood idea with a countown clock for the people crossing to see - Does tend to hurry things up a bit biggrin

One of the issues is drivers thinking that once their lights change from red to green, they have every right to go and anyone still perfectly legally on the crossing is in their way.

That's what I notice driving a bus all day in city centres etc, you can see them getting irate because a person has dared to make them wait an extra 8 seconds.

And in Turkey they have a countdown on the traffic lights so you know how long you to either wait or when the green is going to change to amber etc...

Although I guess in this fecked up island the knob heads will see the countdown on the red light as to how long they have to post on Feckbook a picture of their Costa or Starbucks...

Combination of peds not understanding how crossing work, when the green man goes out cars do not immediately get a green and drivers thinking that green (and sometimes amber) means go!

They have some odd ones in Amsterdam that make a knocking sound, which gets faster in tempo when the man is green. (designed for the partially sighted)

At the crossings I use in central London there are way more pedestrians than cars. I often wonder why the pedestrians have to wait so long for such a short time to cross.
