Is there an efficient way to do this, or do I have to change registered keeper, wait for the V5c and then transfer the plate?

I've bought a car from a mate today and have his full V5c (as he's lazy, so couldn't be bothered sorting it himself).

Tomorrow's job is to notify DVLA and then tax the car. Can I sort my reg plate out at the same time, or is it a two stage process? I have the retention document also.

I did try searching DVLA's website. Indeed, I was going to transfer the keeper tonight, but it appears DVLA's web service needs a break in the evenings! :-)

As well as the the V778 in your name you will also need the 11-digit reference number from the latest V5C registration certificate.

If you use the V5C you have been given by the seller the new V5C will go to him and you will have made him a gift of your VRM.eek

You'll need to wait for the new V5C in your name. The tax & MOT records should then be automatically updated by DVLA.
Have the plates ready to put on as soon as you do the online transfer of your VRM. Arrange for your insurance to be changed to coincide with this.
You may have some fun & games until the MID is updated, so carry documentation with you in case you get pinged by ANPR.

I asked the DVLA the same question last week, as I need to do the same on a car I'm picking up next week. Despite the online change of ownership process, you still need to wait for the new V5 in the post before the change of reg can be done.

However, there was another thread somewhere where someone did the ownership and reg piece at the same time. I did double check, and was told again by DVLA that it is a two-stage process.

My situation is more complicated as my car is currently SORN as well, but sadly despite all of the modern technology at our disposal we still have to wait for a form in the post, before changing the reg and getting another version of that form in the post.

all the V5C stuff is still pretty old fashioned with having to send it off and wait for it to arrive back.

But luckily the reg transfer stuff has been updated recently and can now be done online, presuming everything is correct (V5C, tax and MOT) you will get a instant message saying you can put the new plate on and a relevant V5C will arrive soon.

I thought it would still be the case. Hey ho.

Transferred the car over to me. Taxed from the 1st August(!). I could have held off with the transfer, but either me or my mate will lose out on the tax. This really gripes with me. It's not even about the money. The principal sucks.

Will sit tight and await the new V5 to arrive and then pay the transfer cost to my insurance company.

Thanks all, for confirming the inevitable! biglaugh

Not if you do the sale/transfer on the last day of the month and the new keeper taxes it from the 1st of the following month.

If you inform your insurance company of the planned change of number they may not charge you when you change it, mine didn't.

I'm assuming that you've taken out a new policy for the car.
