Speed awareness course - where does the 3 years begin & end

Daft quick question...
Just been caught doing 46 in a 40 -a letter came through today asking if I was driver etc.. and it mentioned the speed awareness course if the named driver hasn't been on one within the last 3 years. I did one in January 2014 - does the 3 years go to January 2017 or do they just include the full year - which would be really nearlyish 4 years?
