Police cam vans - speed only?
Discussion
Apologies if this has been covered, i searched and couldn't find anything.
Driving past a police camera van today, I wondered if the footage/photos is only ever used to prosecute speeding.
Is anyone aware of evidence from these vans (or their crews) being used to prosecute for dangerous driving/DWCA , either above or within the speed limit?
I am of course excluding DD charges that arise purely out of speed.

Dad got done for seat belt and phone by the same van at the same time.
We have a van that sits 100 yards up the road from home, Dad turned out the drive as he was finishing a call, and hadn't put his belt on. Double whammy!
At least they're not wasting time on irrelevant crimes like scooter attacks. We have a van that sits 100 yards up the road from home, Dad turned out the drive as he was finishing a call, and hadn't put his belt on. Double whammy!

Interesting!
What about general "driving like a cock"? I.e. dodgy overtakes, cutting corners with oncoming traffic, clearly not paying attention etc?
This isn't an axe-grinding post, really just interested.
Every summer North Wales Police say they will be targeting 'dodgy overtakes', but never see them appear to do it. They do get a few 100-plussers though. What about general "driving like a cock"? I.e. dodgy overtakes, cutting corners with oncoming traffic, clearly not paying attention etc?

They are a menace in Hertfordshire currently, they put them in very "profitable" places and then try and dress it up as places where there have been serious injuries and death. have beeen clean for many years but been done twice in two months by a camera van.
All my fault obviously, do what it says on the tin, but they are quite clever in where they put them I think, roundabout exits into a 30, very wide road, no pathways, no houses, wtf! And also places where you "think" the speed is higher as there is usually little traffic, but perhaps a couple of houses on one side so a pavement. Last one was a 30 sign in front of a bust junction, so naturally you are looking at the junction more, then I even saw the s
tty repeater and didn't slow enough, saw the van last minute, am waiting for the letter imminently. And the joyous fact my insurance will now be 25% dearer for 3 or 4 years
Was I being dangerous, of course not. But I was speeding, and that's sadly all that matters, it's pot luck with vans, hardly see thme, and when you do you are usually speeding it seems.
As for can they book anything else, yes if you are making a sign, or on a phone or not wearing a belt. They are manned by ex coppers and they know the law.

Where do you reckon they should go? Oooops, don’t answer

Where the actual incidents have happened I would think, same as they put static cameras? So outside a school, near a tricky junction. NOT in the place most likely to catch people speeding instead.
I have major doubts that the locations of camera vans are actual locations where there are accidents.
More, that there have been accidents on that stretch of road where the 30 limit is, but why not have the camera 200 yards from the sign.
Regardless of if there have been any accidents right there, a little bit cynical obviously, but as said before, all my fault. No complaints about the speed, more the placement of the van. Both of mine were within 200 yds of the sign away from danger.
On anther point, speed bumps work fabulously at controlling speed aggressively, a village near me went that way and have had no accidents of note for years.
Horrid for emergency services and other vehicles, but as a speed enforcement tool they work far better.
They just don't make any money, and who wants that when your funding is cut year on year.

If they are generating a high income, then they are obviously placed on a road where speeding is a problem? You don't need someone to die in order to enforce a speed limit.

There is no incentive for police forces as the FPN money goes to central government not back into individual forces coffers

I guess it depends what the purpose of the police presence is. A number of years ago I drove past a police enforcement van at a slightly illegal speed on a dual carriageway (probably 80mph). About a quarter of a mile further on were two traffic cars in a lay by, which made me think it was an ANPR setup. I spent the next mile trying to convince myself that I'd be ok.... if they were going to stop me they would have done.
I still ended up driving back down the dual carriage way turning round and going very slowly past the van to have a good look at it and confirmed it wasn't a "speed" van but an ANPR van.
I was in quite a conspicuous car at the time (brand new Impreza STI) and the traffic coppers in the lay-by gave me a little wave as I went past for the second time....
I didn't get anything in the post.
