My girlfriend is currently learning to drive, and has provisional insurance with Diamond with which she is the main driver with her parents as additional drivers. Now as far as I'm aware, she is fully covered to drive with myself supervising as I meet all of the criteria to supervise a learner, but can I take over and drive the car if needed? I ask as we want to take her car on a holiday next week so that she can get some experience driving long distance which helped me immensely when I was learning, but I want to be sure that I can also drive if she gets tired or we wish to use motorways, but nothing is mentioned in the insurance policy about this. My current insurance doesn't allow me to drive third party on other cars, but is this different for provisional insurance policies? My common sense suggests that in order to supervise, you must also be able to take over control if required, but insurance and common sense don't always go hand in hand.

Common sense ought to tell you that you need to be a named driver on her insurance in order to be covered by her policy. It doesn't just happen by magic.

Insurance policies are generally defined in terms of the things they do cover rather than the things they don't cover. So if it doesn't say that it covers you to drive, then it doesn't cover you to drive (even if you think that it ought to cover you). Sounds like you need to be on there as an additional driver (like her parents) if you want to actually drive it, rather than just supervise her.

OP - suggest you have a read of this:

http://roadwisedrivertraining.co.uk/supervising-dr...

as it covers the basics of your requirements and responsibilities.

You will need insurance if you intend to drive.

How long have you had your license? You also mustn't be under the influence of drink whilst supervising, nor use a handheld mobile phone.

So she has a policy for herself and her parents. Of course you can't drive it. Unless you have a DOC extension on your own policy that'll give you tpo cover.
