If a motorway has a average sped limit enforced for say roadworks of 50 mph, at what speed does the penalties statrt ? I stay to the stated limit but always see cars doing what seems like 60 mph

In average speed camera zones, where progress can be made, I generally keep my average speed to within 10% of the limit; i.e. 44 in a 40, 55 in a 50, etc.

Sometimes, when the average speed is reduced, say due to dawdlers, MLM's, ect, it is possible to get back to the maximum average by doing a fair bit more than the limit for while.

This might explain why you see some drivers going faster by some margin.

It depends if you are talking speedo or GPS.

I'm in West London with an average speed zone from Chiswick to the M3

If I'm in my polo 40 on Waze is 42 on the speedo
50 on Waze is 54 on the speedo

I will normally go through at 42/ 52 on waze which will be even more on the speedo

I think different areas have different rules, but in general, the limit + 10% + 2mph. So 50mph, they'll start dishing out at 58mph.

10% + 2 is where they start so you’ll get done at 57.

I find in motorway 50’s the trucks stay on their 56MPH limiters where they can so I drive at their speed. A lot of other car drivers seem to drop into the 40’s so to them I probably look like a hooligan. It does mean you pass people easily though and avoids the scenario where you’re sitting next to another car for miles.

It does amaze me that you still see the odd (British registered) car going way over the limit and even more often people still brake as they pass the cameras.

I always whack the cruise control on at a few mph over the stated limit, knowing that it under reads, plus there is always a margin built into the cameras too, I always seem to bomb past people.

It's a similar scenario when people see a Police car on the motorway in L1, doing 65, they crawl past at 69 whereas I zoom past the crawlers, doing an indicated 75 +, I can almost hear them saying WTF!

There's the real reason the transport lobby groups wanted a 50 limit for HGVs; so they can drive flat to the floor and be immune from prosecution.

Bear in mind that lots of the SPECS cameras are fake. While the M3 was being converted there was only one pair of all those SPECS cameras actually connected to anything between Camberley and Bagshot. The others had no cables going to them at all. Not difficult to spot.

They stuck some up during roadworks around Basingstoke in a 50 limit a couple of years ago too, none of them were connected to anything. Really obvious when they plonk it on the concrete base of one of the foot bridges biggrin

In theory.

But I've always done 60mph on the GPS without issue. I'm not sure how they calculate the distance, whether they have to take account of someone continually weaving from lane 1 to 3 or something and whether that means there's a little more margin than might otherwise be expected, maybe all my GPS devices have been a little out too.

+1

Indicated 60 in a 50, indicated 80 in a 70. That's real 55 in a 50 and 75 in an 70.
Slightly over, but not enough to attract attention.

Given that these are maximums and averages are always less than that,
because there's always some idiot with poor lane discipline, I'm still waiting for
my first ticket.

The day we get done for 75 in a 70, isn't it time to declare that enforcement has
reached punitive levels - if it hasn't already ?

Don't understand why you'd do that on purpose - why take a chance for a couple of MPH?

Is GPS speed considered to be spot-on? Just got back from the US and had a very ordinary Chevy Equinox mid-size SUV. Its speedo and digital speed display in the cluster were exactly the same as the GPS speed using Here WeGo on an iPhone.

Boredom, curiosity. It was only risking 3 points and £60. I'd far rather be passing people smoothly than having people hover around at the same speed in adjacent narrow lanes.

Tends to be more accurate because it's not required to over-read, even with the slightly reduced accuracy associated with elevation changes. Some marques are more accurate than others.

I set my cruise control at 10% +2mph on motorway roadworks and have never received a speeding ticket for this. I’ve used the M62, M60 and M6 almost daily through the years of roadworks they’ve had.

I have noticed the recent set of roadworks north of the M58 junction are set at 40 mph. A new ploy to cause even more chaos?

Just be warned that some of the new generation ASC used for temporary works now use
wireless link to avoid the need for hundreds of metres of twisted pair cabling
Battery powered. Like the new remote operated temporary traffic lights.

There is a new generation set of temporary traffic lights being trailed which are fitted with ANPR to record red light offences and ASC to stop the idiots driving like tts though road works putting workers at risk.

Fair point, these were the old ones, one pair each way obviously cabled up and the rest at all wonky angles and nothing going to them.

That probably explains why I got overtaken so often during the 3 years of M3 misery! I always used cruise set at 54 mph!

Does anybody know if the new permanent gantries just check speed when you pass them, or averages between them?

As you pass them Gatso style, seen them flash a few times. There is also a camera looking towards the speed boards in case you contest what the ticket says vs the displayed speed at the time.

They couldn't use average as the gantries in theory could all display a different limit

I use GPS speedo and just set cruise for 1 mph less than limit. any SPECS controlled stuff near me is not for a long enough distance to worry about the 1 minute or so less for me to do the journey at a higher speed and risk getting done.

I do however, (where possible) maintain that speed consistently throughout the zone unlike everyone else who plays go fast - slow down - go fast - slow down. Is it really that hard for everyone to keep to the same speed.

Sadly it is too hard for people to maintain a steady speed. Hills both up and down seem to confound many, as does a situation where the car in front moves over and they then feel the need to speed up rapidly to catch the car in front then anchor on once they have.
