Just passed one on the A3 heading south just past the Chessington turn off.

A3 goes to motorway size and a long straight where most people open up.

Just made me wonder how they work. I got zapped by one a couple of years back. I was in the outside lane.

Can they only cover one lane at a time? Are they manually controlled or just left to get on with it? And with no markings on the road as with the yellow cameras, how do they judge the speed of the cars?

Yep. Another boring commute home. Lol.

I believe the markings don't actually do anything, therefore, they are not required. They only exist as a cross-check to confirm the measured speed based on distance covered using two photographs with precise time stamps.

I would be astonished if modern ones can't monitor multiple lanes and vehicles simultaneously.

They usually have a hatch in the rear door behind which the camera is mounted.

I can't help but imagining them pretending it's a gun, and making "pew pew pew" noises, or uttering little Arnie-style one liners in a nasal voice when they get one.

Really simple to use. Laser & camera on tripod. Manually move the laser to target vehicles. They can be coming towards you or going away on any lane.

Incredibly boring to use really.

The thing is they are deliberately trying to get a slip read in that video by targeting cars side on and moving the laser which is not what we are trained to do. Also the LTI 20 - 20 in that video does not have the UK specific home office software installed.

So unlike the fixed cameras they can't grab a load of cars at once?

So when I was caught in a line of other cars doing the same speed on the M11 a few years ago, I was just unlucky/stupid.

What astonishes me is how fast the local 'safety' camera van drives between locations, he's certainly not sticking to the speed limits - do as we say not as we do!

The camera used in many of the safety camera vans uses a laser with an max range of approx one mile, and relies on something reflective on your car for the beam to return back from to calculate the speed, so anything matt won't reflect the beam back - time to start flatting down your front number plate, paintwork and anything else that is shiny wink

... and low level crime won't be investigated. Does anyone feel that our public servants are not doing performing the service for which we are paying? Driving over the last couple of days, I've seen four police camera vans skulking in spots where it's safer to go quicker and therefore more like to rake in the money. My respect for such actions is non existent.

Policy regarding location changed sometime ago (probably due to the extra income that might be generated). It moved to siting the scamera vans at safe places where 'speeding' is more likely rather than at dangerous places where the speed limit might actually make sense! MOST people still think 'they only use these at accident blackspots'. TOTALLY WRONG - most of the time the reverse is true. Posters from the 'system' have confirmed this and have their own twisted rationale to explain why.

I think the already contorted figures regarding public support for the whole scamera system of speed enforcement might take a knock if the public had such information.

I'd like to see it proudly displayed on the websites of the parastic partnerships that carry out this 'work'.

I'll help: £Arrive alive: We'll nick you on the safe bits of road - it helps our cash flow.

Saw one of those grubs at Ct in Nottingham last year. He was a weasly scruffy oik, about 5ft 6 with 1" soles on his shoes. His shirt was to big for him. I can just imagine him huddling up in the corner of any pub instead of joining the rest of humanity.
