I work in a small Welsh town with limited parking and no motorcycle bays. Last time I parked my bike on the street I had the slip on nicked off it, so I've taken to parking it in a small private yard behind our offices. The yard is accessible via an alleyway/footpath.

This morning I had a complaint from a bloke from the mental health place next door that I couldn't bring a bike up the alleyway as it for foot traffic only. Is this correct? Would it be acceptable if I dismounted and wheeled it up? (it's quite a steep slope so I usually drive it up very slowly, then wheel back down on my way out).

Is it a private alley? Who owns it? Googling suggests that it is legal to push less than 15 yards on a pavement. Who is the MH guy going to complain to?

It will probably depend what the title deeds say about your access from the alleyway.

Personally I'd ask the bloke if he owns the alleyway, or if he knows who does. If he can't tell you, then he can't do much to enforce his opinion and he can probably be ignored.

The alleyway is communal access and a public footpath.

I think he'll probably complain to my company director (not overly concerned about that) but I just thought I'd better check whether I was in fact acting unlawfully or something. I don't particularly want to get into an argument with them about it, but some people are quite territorial about things they do not have a right to be territorial about.

I should add that they have set up a table and chairs halfway down the alleyway so they can smoke outside which partially blocks the alley and a fenced off garden area directly opposite our yard entrance which makes getting in and out very tricky.

Cheers that's exactly what I was looking for. I reckon it's rather over 15m to my yard, but if I walk my bike that's acceptable. Ironically walking my bike would be much easier without the aformentioned obstructions blocking the alley but I don't want to be unreasonable about it.

I think he can jog on, no police officer is going to be interested unless you are ragging the bike up there dangerously making a racket.

Depends how much a pain he makes himself to your boss really.

I don't think he has grounds for complaint if you push the bike up there.

Unless you are damaging the land / obstructing I think technically you can carry / push anything on any right of way.

True, I've always given way to pedestrians if they are in the alleyway, and my bike isn't actually stored there. I've always regarded a wheeled motorbike as the same as a wheeled pushbike to some extent, I don't think they can possibly complain if it is switched off and walked.
