OK I did do a SAC nearly 3 years ago.

Got a letter to name driver caught on camera. 85 on a motorway.

It was clear, daytime blah blah bang to rights etc

Would this be 3pts and 100 quid or worse?

Lovely pic of me in my old BMW. No one else in frame and I'm sitting in lane 1.

I count myself lucky to have managed so long with a clean licence. I drive a lot and ride motorbikes so it's not like I'm some old MLM.

Cheers.

I was done at 82mph on the M5 and got SAC so you will be in the 3 points territory...

Speed awareness course to be offered 79 to 86mph.

But your last SAC was within 3 years, so you may get points and fine. Wait and see what they offer you.

A3(M) is near Portsmouth.

Interested to know because, certain areas aside, UK motorways tend not to be infested with speed enforcement vans.

Taken from the bridge just before/after that junction, presumably?

It was a van on a raised bit next to hard shoulder between Esher and Leatherhead turn offs heading south.

One of the few times I didn't have my phone in its holder with Waze on. On checking afterwards there were loads of alerts for it.

Ah well. It's not so much the fine, more what the points will do to my insurance, which has been nice and low for years now.

Edited to add, yes it wasn't the A3M, just the bit when it widens up to be like a real motorway down to Guildford.

Bad luck. They move that van up and down the A3, usually in a lay by, sometimes my Tom Tom picks it up if another kind sole has logged it. A van is often further down near Petersfield not sure if it's the same one, again in a lay by.

The A3 is pretty good for cameras though, usually the only one to worry about is through the tunnel at Hindhead, other than that it's a clear run.

Bad luck OP; 3pts and a fine would be my reckoning. I use that part of the A3 regularly and I'd say I pass a camera van on it maybe 25% of the time; they're either about 1 mile south of the NSL signs heading south, between Esher and M25 or further along just before you get to the twin petrol stations.

Often on the Hog's back too if you turn off the A3 to go Farnham way.

I must look at Waze again. The first time I tried it there seemed to be very few users on there. Maybe it's actually useful these days?

Radar/laser detectors are starting to become less reliable as there's new very low power radar speed measuring equipment being rolled out and so many false laser alerts due to new-fangled car anti-collision systems.

So with even more caution today I drove to Guildford via Ranmore Common and I think it was on the 246 dual carriageway where everyone was in lane 1 doing 50, I stopped myself from bowling down the clear lane 2.

And there on the opposite side was the camera van.

Phew!

Think it's time to hang up the spurs of my 400hp V8 and get some old 60s cruiser instead.

Pocket GPS and a Garmin SatNav (or even better upload to your car Sat Nav - not all are compatible) http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

I have only passed 1 cam ever without alert from that database.

I've stopped driving unless I have to. My bike has been SORNed all year. Any enjoyment from driving has been systematically eliminated in this country and so now I do other things instead.

I guess his, and many other people's enjoyment, involved driving while not keeping to stupidly low limits, but simply enjoying driving by being in a pleasant zone of concentration involving the road ahead.

Yes.
And to get any enjoyment now, I'm having to break more laws than ever before, because the State is an absolute control freak.
And to rub salt into the wounds, the state of the roads is totally unacceptable.

So you think you should be able to do what you like, where you like, whenever you like, don't be a cock, last time I check that was called anarchy.

I'm surprised this thread lasted this long before BRAKE and Mumsnet turned up.

Drop the arguments chaps. Question has been answered so nothing to see here.

Can't a single thread be posted on PH without the handbags coming out. Fekin' tiresome and is ruining what used to be a bit of enjoyable conversation with a bit of joshing thrown in.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.

I find the proliferation of cameras makes me anxious about making a mistake. Unlike the BRAKE driving legends on this thread, I sometimes do make mistakes.

However I didn't comment about breaking traffic rules, I commented about driving not being fun.

As well as being under constant surveillance by all manner of cameras, we have NSL roads which are now 50s or 40s. Drivers who are afraid to overtake tractors. Too much traffic. 20mph zones where they are pointless. Routinely jammed motorways. No fun.

The descent into anarchy was your own extrapolation of one inch of comment to a mile of conclusions.
