Just had this happen to me. I go out to go and collect my partner from her work to be confronted with a car parked across my drive thereby me not being able to drive out. I went to around 10 houses on either side of us and also across the road opposite to see if it was any other their visitors, to no avail. After 20 minutes I was standing talking to one of my neighbours when an older lady appeared, marched up to the car and proceeded to get in it. I asked what she was doing and that she had blocked my drive when I wanted to get out, to which she replied that she was terribly sorry and that when she parked there were no spaces. Frankly, I couldn't have cared less that there were no spaces available, you just drive up the road until you find one. Thank goodness it wasn't an emergency, after all, I do have a 94 year old mother in a care home...imagine if I had received a phone call from them telling me she had been taken ill. My question here is if the woman hadn't appeared, what could I have done?

you could have followed her home, then made a quick trip to waitrose for some overpriced frozen sausages.

Illegal to prevent someone entering a public highway. Not sure how urgent for BiB it would have been though.

Silly mare!

Isnt it against the law to block someone in their drive? So potentially could have phoned the Police.

Use sufficient and reasonable force to move the vehicle, I would have thought?

Some folk dont care at all. My friend parked at a chip shop, the spaces are long, fit a car and there is enough space behind to squeeze a car on and block you in, hence nobody parks fully to the end. Anyway, popped in, grabbed a chipy and theres a car blocking him in, with a kid in the car. "my mums just went in for a sunbed, she wont be long" then closed the window.....

15 mins later, chipy ruined. She doeent appologise just says "whats the problem I wasnt long"

This has happened a few times to me.

I always let one tyre down so it is completely flat and leave a note on the windscreen explaining I have wasted as much time of theirs as they have of mine.

I never get repeat offenders.

In Barnet, the old bill just give you the number for council parking enforcement.

You don't even get a cut.

It is illegal to block access to the highway and the Police have an obligation to deal with the offending vehicle.
It is not illegal to block access from the highway to a private property.

So a different situation if you come home and find you can't park on your drive than trying to leave home to find you're blocked in.

thanks for all your replies all. Mikeveal, thanks for that, a friend who I spoke with later last night told me the same thing.

I bet you don't do that as the target for reprisals would be too obvious.

We have this occasionally when the old lady opposite (who doesn't drive) has visitors and tells them it's ok to park across our driveway. Ask her nicely to get them to move it and last time she justified it by saying "well your car wasn't on the drive!".

Now our council have an initiative where you can register your dropped kerb and ring a hotline if your dropped kerb is blocked. No idea on the timeframes involved, but my guess is if there's money to be made, it may be prioritised biggrin Like to think we'd never need it as we get on with all the neighbours, but nice to know it's there...

Standard these days.... Our neighbours do it it all the time...

One car parked on their drive, one parked outside front of our house. Plenty of space outside the front of their house for another car to park, father turns up, parks his car right across the end of our drive completely blocking it. Same for all their friends too.

I guess they don't want to inconvenience our neighbours in any way?

I've always wondered when people recommend this method, do they keep a ready supply of dog st handy?
