Hi all, just a bit curious about this as there’s a section of the a1m outside Doncaster (crossing over river don next to sprotbrough/warmsworth) where signs for a 50mph speed limit have been put up for as long as I can remember due to some “accident removal/repairs/maintenance”.

Personally I never do more than 60mph through that zone but I’ve been flashed by cars before at that speed and see many cars shoot through at 70+mph especially at night when it’s quiet.

Is this zone just a case of someone forgetting to remove signs, or is it actually in force and I’ve been lucky there’s been no speed cams/vans yet?

My friend got caught doing 35 in a 30 zone the other day and her telling me about it has gotten me rethinking.

Many thanks.

If it's where I think it is there's damage to the bridge over the Don on one side.

Sounds like the one, if I recall correctly the signs put up say accident damage but I’ve never seen anyone working on the bridge in the past 8 months.

It is near Donny and must be for the damage.

There are a few spots further up the A1 towards North Yorkshire where there are short bursts (1/4 mile) of 50 mph where the concrete barrier is still curing.

Loads of people ignore it or don't even notice, one or the other.

The foundations of the Don bridge are quite complex allowing for the bridge to be jacked up when subsidence occurs

Someone drove off the bridge a year or so ago and since them the temporary barriers and 50 limit have been imposed.

Yet another pointless limit reduction then

Drive that section quite regularly and its always queuing there anyway. A continuous speed of 50 mph there would be good !

Other bit that annoys me (OK I got caught speeding on this section) is where the M62 meets up with the A1 J32A, 50 mph. Never seen the need as bend is gradual and smooth

I believe that there are plans to improve the A1M between Blyth and up to Castleford. I suspect that whatever the damage was to the bridge, it is so expensive to repair that it is waiting until the works start.

I hate to think how they are going to add a lane without some horrific delays in that part of the motorway. The cutting is already very steep, and I don't see how they can add a carriageway to run live traffic before closing lanes....

I don't think there was any other damage other than the guard rail, which looks nothing more than a handrail hence the extra barriers now in place. I walk the dog along the river sometimes and you can see there wasn't any damage to the supports.

It'll be almost impossible to widen the A1 along that section too, would imagine it'll need relocating.

The A1(M) should be 3 lanes from York to Peterborough! I use this every time I pick my daughter up, usually avoiding the M62-M18 section like the plague, it's ridiculously busy in this day and age!

The 50 bit over the river Don gets a damn good ignoring when I occasionally use it, as does the stupid bend you mentioned! Utterly pointless! irked

Goes across the end of A64 which is the exit for York. Yes it needs upgrading as crazy busy to the M18, and beyond these days.

The right hand bend coming from the M62 Eastbound on to the A1 Southbound often has queueing around it at evening rush hour stretching back from the three lanes to two bit(s)

The left hander from the A1 Northbound to the M62 Westbound sometimes has traffic backing up from the next junction if there is an incident on there. Plus it's a lane merge-athon.

Blimey!

Let me know when you're next driving that section and I'll avoid it.
