I am exporting a 1961 car to the USA & it has an interesting (maybe!) reg number that I hope I may be able to sell on. The car is has been "MOT'd" (but is "historic" so doesn't need an MOT really).
How & when do I put it on a Retention Certificate before I "permanently export" it?
Can I?
I hope perhaps I can export it on the VIN etc numbers?
What sort of grief will my buyer have when it gets to California???
Any help appreciated

If the V5C doesn't say "Non-transferable" on it, then you just transfer the plate off, onto retention. A new age-related (probably non-transferable) plate is then allocated.
You wait until you get the V5C back with that reg, then tell DVLA you've exported it. The Californian does whatever he needs to do to register it locally.
