Ill be brief.

Bought car 5 months ago.
Quoted around for insurance and selected a 3rd party fire and theft one. Printed out quote/ schedule of payments.
Contacted them and got insured.

Pulled today by traffic plod, no insurance. Issued a fine and 6 points. To save car being towed had to buy dear new policy at the roadside.

TrafPol shared that the car is insured but not under my name?

I am going to dig out all emails on matter tomorrow and check my bank.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? i.e. quote from a price comparison website accepted and purchased, but the policy not set up.

Im all of a doo daa at the moment.

It wasn't one of those ridiculous broker company quotes was it.
I remember helping a mate get insurance sorted. I think it was gocompare we used and the top result seemed a fair price, went through paid and thought that was it.
It turned out to be an actual broker not a proper insurance company. They took the money and called shortly after to try and get a 'best price' which was nowhere near the advertised price that was paid for. Took 2 weeks to get the money back, scam artists.

If you did it on line, and it was pukka, you would have been e-mailed a certificate of insurance. You should assume nothing before that, and you could/should print that out, or at least carry the e-mail with you.

That is the starting point. You should have docs and have paid money. If so, then some mistake has happened which should be rectifiable. If not you are in trouble.

Did you do full disclosure on the new policy btw? You dont want that to go wrong too.

Hope you get it sorted.

Indeed. Did you pay in full, or by direct debit - and has any money actually left your bank account?

Any idea why you were stopped?

Never mind your bank - why weren't you on the phone to your (presumed) insurance company at the roadside?

You believed you were insured - did you not have confirmation emails / insurance company login to view policy online etc? Have you paid premiums? The name thing seems weird. Unusual name?

You need to speak to your insurers / broker, quickly. Good luck getting sorted! (I'm assuming this is genuine and you really did think you were insured, obviously)

If it's a genuine insurance company bk-drop, then they will issue retrospective cover that'll get shot of the charge.

BTW, if the vehicle shows as insured, and it's only a name difference, then why were you pulled?
Was this policy's premium roughly in line with other quotes, or was it suspiciously cheap?
Does the insurer look and feel legit?

What I do not understand is why the OP thought it necessary to buy a new policy at the roadside if he really believed he was insured? Why not just call the insurance company/broker for confirmation?

Exactly. Worst case scenario he could get added as a named driver on the existing policy.

They're not all open on Sunday, but if the police could not contact the company then they should not have offered to seize the car.

"Quoted around" meaning what? Did you get a quote from an insurance company wia their website? Or a well known comparison site? Or was it via someone whose ohone number you got in a pub or found on Facebook?

If it was the last one, read up on "ghost brokers"

OK I have done some digging. (and yes it was via a price comparison website)

When I bought the car insurance in June, I either did not complete the purchase *or* I did, and it was not processed properly but have no way of proving it. Pored through my bank statements and can see tax/insurance every month for all 3 vehicles but not this one. (Just tax for this one,)
All I have is the print out of the quote and direct debit schedule (From the insurance company itself, Admiral)

Just cancelled policy I purchased yesterday, and put a new policy on it just now (just over £1,000 for the year, not too bad with 9 points)

Lesson for the day. Make sure you fully set up your policy and check your bank every month to make sure it is being paid!!

Silly lad.

TL/DR: Did not insure car properly, 6 points, feel a right tit!

Ooof. Well done for sticking your hand up to it, though, and just remember that you're lucky you found out that way...

BTW - what was the "covered, but different name" bit, then?

That doesn’t explain why the car is insured by someone else, especially if you’ve owned it for 5 months.

The officer said that, I might have got that bit wrong, or he is mistaken. If someone else has decided to insure it, I am certainly not being charged for it....

One more question, thanks for your help so far.

Is there any benefit in appealing the points/ conviction on the grounds of an 'honest mistake'?

Guessing no....
