Can 'smart' motorway cameras distinguishing between lanes
Discussion
Views welcome from those that know how these things work: I'm in Lane 1 on the M25, gantry signs showing 40mph (which, unusually, I'm doing - more or less). I move to Lane 2 to accommodate a vehicle joining via slip road, as it meets the main carriageway it comes past me on the inside at about 50 - 55, double flash. I know there are separate cameras for each lane, but irrationally I have started to fret. Will I get the rap?

If you were not speeding, then no, you will not get the fine.Usually the cameras would detect which lane triggered but if there are multiple cars in the frame they will check.

One device covers all lanes. When a vehicle goes too fast it triggers and the evidence will say which lane the car was in.Works when you change lanes too.
The HADECS 3 don't need painted lines to assist in speed detection and calculation, it's done using two radars, one tracking and one speed, which scan across all lanes (which are designated individually) , and calculate which vehicle(s) are speeding in which lanes when these points meet, verified twice with two pictures. They are constantly scanning each lane if the camera is switched on, which may or may not be all of the time or if limits are displayed; no displayed limit doesn't mean it's off, it's NSL and you could still be caught at 72mph for example.
If you weren't speeding then you weren't picked up, it's that simple, the system has already worked it out before firing it off to back office and didn't even add your car into the equation.
Where you see HADECS, just make sure you're at the posted limit or NSL if none. You can never tell if it's on.

I got flashed by a hadecs 3 on the M5, no speed showing and It came throlough for 82mph, picture shows 2 lines computer generated with distance time stamp, no lines on the motorway at all, photo covers all 3 lanes with ease
They're a lot more advanced than HADECS 2 which was one camera unit per lane. What people don't know is that when these were live only one camera was likely fitted per gantry to save installation and equipment cost, usually lane 2/3 or 3/4.Anyway, HADECS 3 can do a lot more, such as identifying freewheeling lorries going over 56mph downhill or goods vehicles in the "fast" lane. It tracks vehicle size as well as location on the carriageway. Wait until that's unlocked...
Catching people going down closed Red X lanes will be next I imagine.

Not that far off now, legislation has been changed and cameras being tested.Landshark said:

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if there’s a delay between the limit changing and the camera becoming active?
Yes, in this case on the M25 between J10 and J14 it’s ten seconds ( I believe it varies slightly for each Road/Section).Swole said:

Please let it track the idiots that don't understand merge in tern and fire a ballistic missile at their vehicle.Catching people going down closed Red X lanes will be next I imagine.

Funnily enough I'll be pleased when they switch that bit on. Can't stand the cheeky buggers who drive down past 'lane closed' red crosses.
You want to try standing in the carriageway at an accident or dealing with a broken down vehicle in a live lane. That tends to get the blood pressure up a bit when the ignorant or plain stupid ignore the red X.Landshark said:

10 seconds is the minimum delay but not necessarily the delay as it is usually much longer than 10 seconds
Yes, often up to 60secs. For M25 goers, anti-clockwise J9-8, the most recent camera is not yet live. No aspect cameras at the moment, so keep an eye. Once fitted could go live imminently. Best indication is when the police fly through it to test, if you happen to see it.
As for Red X detection, there is a test site in the Midlands already, so enforcement country wide is not far off.

6. The speed limit changed just as I passed under the electronic sign, so I had no time to reduce my speed.
When a mandatory speed limit changes on the overhead AMI signal, there is an automatic one minute delay before enforcement can begin against the newly displayed limit. The flash units can still activate during this period, even though the new limit would not be enforced. In this situation, drivers are not expected to brake sharply, but rather to reduce their speed so that they are within the speed limit as soon as it is safe to do so.

1: There is no such "Fast Lane"
2: Depending on the road layout HGV's over 7.5 ton can use all lanes.
3: Goods vehicles can use any lane - the term good vehicle can be a small van or pickup truck.
4: Max speed limit on motorway for HGV is 60 mph.

It's makes perfect sense. Sorry, I forgot that you were chief Mumsnet of the pipe and slippers police. Alas, this is PH after all, average age 73yrs.1: There is no such "Fast Lane"

1. See inverted commas
2. On a motorway, an HGV, referring to 7.5T+ cannot
3. Goods vehicle referring to HGV
4. 56mph referring to speed limiter
5. You clearly have no knowledge of how the system works or the capability. I suggest a job on the Highways is for you should you wish to become informed.
And a bah-humbug to you.

Your one of these "Its a fast lane" and because you have (may have) a fast car you feel that your the only person allowed to use it like it your own personal lane.1. See inverted commas

Take a HGV test and perhaps you might also understand things better and be educated about Goods & Commercial vehicles.
Even better bring your "fast car" to Santapod and lets see how it stacks up to a "commercial vehicle" I will let you have the right hand "fast lane" if you want.
