Bought a car end of November and taxed it that day. Dealer said he would send off 'change of keeper' part and I left with my new keep slip, a cover note and an email confirming tax.

Mid December I revived my new V5C.

End of December I had an event that requires my docs so I double checked MOT, tax and insurance the night before. Car showed as untaxed.
Rang DVLA first thing and they said the tax has been cancelled as it had taken too long to receive change if keeper details. Based on when I recieved V5C, it would have been 3 weeks max.

Result was I had to re-tax the car and apparently they will send me a refund.

I'm slightly hacked off that I've been running around for a month with no tax.

How has this happened? DVLA fk up? Dealer dropped a bk? Is anyone aware of a time limit for change of ownership?

I'm now out of pocket for 2 lots of tax and waiting for a refund...

dealer does not need to send anything anymore its all done online as part of handover and available 24hrs a day 7 days a week !
dealer cock up I would say should have done it and given you the print out you can then tax immediately online as well

Yup. Anyone can tax a car at any time online. All you have to do is give the number on the slip and off you go. Last car I bought I updated my Insurance and taxed it on my phone in their office.

I taxed it online before I left the dealers using the number on the slip.

I got a confirmation email to show the car had been taxed.

The car was showing as not taxed a month later so I called the DVLA and they said they had cancelled my tax.

I had to apply and pay for my tax online again and wait for a refund for the original tax I paid that the DVLA cancelled.

but did the dealer register the car to you or just give you the slip off the old v5c?
They should be using the online portal now?

Wrong

you can do it online but only when the office is manned at the DVLA, both when i bought my Monaro and later sold my Vectra it states you can only do it while their office is open

I don't understand why DVLA would cancel the tax. If you used the 'new keeper' part of the V5c to tax it, then that's it. The buyer cannot change the ownership details. But perhaps they failed to put the date of sale as the day you bought the car.

Incidentally, you don't have to be insured to tax a car anymore. Anybody can do it. If you have a taxed car that is uninsured, however, you will get a stern letter from the DVLA after a few weeks!

It's what I am trying to understand as well. All they told me on the phone was that I would have to re-tax it as the tax I bought (money left account, confirmation email received ) had been canceled.
I used the new keeper part to buy it online.

I've still not received a refund, so we'll see where that goes..

Exactly this ^^

I bought a car last year and was quite impressed with the handover process. They logged in to the .Gov website, tapped some buttons and it was done. They then asked if I wanted 6 months tax or a year, slid out the way and let me enter my card details. I'd wondered how I'd tax the car and presumed I may need to drive home and logon, but seems the norm (I bought another car and they did the same) for the dealer to prompt you to do it while you're there.

Much easier!

The update of keeper details online is great. The double bubble for DVLA in tax revenue isnt so great.

What's a "registered" trader?

The same system powers change of keeper for the trade as well as the public, and it does shut at 7pm.

OK. Plot thickens...

Looking at the V5C now and apparently I've been the new keeper since 28th October 2017.
Considering I bought it on 24th November 2017, thats a bit odd.

My bank statement shows £190.00 going out on 8th Dec and then £190.00 going out on 1st Jan.
Got a cheque from DVLA today for £174.16.

I've picked up an extra months road tax. Dealer pulling a fast one?

Never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.

Have you never put the wrong month (year, even) down when you write the date...?
