I've used mine in the US, Greece, Spain and the Canaries.
It's never been questioned and it's held together with selotape.
Mine too, never had a problem although any Police action will probably require to see some photo ID but then you'll have your passport anyway... It's never been questioned and it's held together with selotape.
The AA has a useful list: https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/driving-abroa...
The RAC has another: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/travel/driving-abroad/...

It's falling to pieces because it's about 25 years old.

I think you're confused. I'm carrying around my old style paper licence which has never been a problem in any country I've visited. I've never had an IDP.

Likewise, I've driven in many different countries and never had an IDP or been asked to produce one. It's falling to pieces because it's about 25 years old.
For £20 or whatever just get a modern license. Trying to explain to some Russian cop at the side of the road that this tatty old piece of paper is your driving license doesn't sound like fun. Nothing a little bribe won't sort though.
Expect problems at the hire desk too if you're renting. Nothing a little bribe won't sort though.
I don't get why people are still holding to these old licenses. I'd far rather have good photo id in my wallet should I need it, and never need to worry about hire car hassles and the like.

I didn't swap to plastic because you previously had to have a paper counterpart, and they expire every 10 years. Expect problems at the hire desk too if you're renting. Nothing a little bribe won't sort though.

I don't have to worry about it, its always worked just fine for me and its never been questioned. I don't remember the last time i was asked for photo id.
When that changes I'll probably swap to plastic.

Because people like to live off the grid and they don’t have smartphones, or internet at home or .............. oh Expect problems at the hire desk too if you're renting. Nothing a little bribe won't sort though.

I completely agree, the argument seems to be over cost and inconvenience.
Cost is negligible at £14 and anyone who believes £1.40 a year matters is dreaming. It’s also not a stealth tax, as it probably costs as much to produce, maintain and record these as it produces in income.
Inconvenience is totally moot, as having a plastic credit card sized licence is infinitely more convenient than a torn and sellotaped piece of A4. Renewing online takes a few minutes every decade.
Paper licence lasts til you are 70, but photo one expires every 10yrs, think update free if you are only updating details (apart from points removal?), so change when expires seems most cost effective; also kept mine because of paper sheet although that has now gone, not sure why it can't have a chip with all details on and plod have a reader with all the other tech in the cars!

What else do you do to save yourself £1.40 a year? How much of a difference does that amount make to you each year?Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
