Cought for Speeding on Friday ??
Discussion
Hello fellow PHers!
My court date for a speeding offence last June has finally come around. I was caught by a mobile speed camera doing 86 in a 60. As I am over the cut off for a FPN which is 85 I have elected to go to court and plead guilty and apologise profusely and show that I am aware of the error of my ways that day. I was overtaking a vehicle on a clear straight road and kept my foot in too hard too long in a car I’d only had a few days much quicker than my former. Caught bang to rights but thought I was doing around 75 not 86!
Has anyone got any recent experience with courts regarding speeding offences and any advice etc?
I have a clean licence always has been and this is a first offence in 13 years I’ve had my licence of any kind. I need my licence for my job and can not afford a ban unless it’s weeks, what can I expect?

You will likely get weeks, not much more than a month. Been here before, 16 years ago I got a 5 week ban for 108/70.
As you say, just be yourself, apologise very much, explain what you explained here, far more power than you're used to, you wanted to commit the overtake as swiftly as possible and you misjudged the power. And of course, wear a suit and tie.
At the same time I lost my licence a then neighbour got caught at 134 on the M1. He pleaded that he'd lose his job without a licence, they asked him what holiday he had left, he said 3 weeks, they gave him that. Pissed me off a bit!

97mph in a 60mph limit, nice letter in the post and a picture of the car, do not pass go, an audience with Taunton Magistrates if you please however couldn't attend in person so the most gut wretching, pathetic, cringeworthy crawling letter was sent and they rewarded my efforts with a £100 fine and 6 points...
Found a copy of the letter the other day there, it was worse then I remember but seemed to work.

I got pinged by an officer with a gun thingy in 2011. 107 in a 70, kept right foot down a few seconds longer than I should have overtaking on a dual carriageway, bright clear day, no other cars in sight other than the one I had just overtaken. No excuses, caught bang to rights, apologised profusely to the officer when he pulled me over (I spotted him parked up the slip road when I looked in the rear view mirror). Went to court, apologised profusely again, the Police prosecutor told the magistrates that I had been very polite and apologised immediately to the Officer acknowledging my wrongdoing with no excuses... 6 points and a £300 fine... Have to say I was gobsmacked.... I suspect I had a large chunk of luck but being polite and acknowledging your misdemeanor can (sometimes) go a long way to lessening the punishment... I rarely exceed 80mph these days and keep the WOT stuff for trackdays

I set the speed limit alarm in my car at 82mph so even when my foot is in it and I see red etc that chiming alarm has hauled me back to the speed limit many times. - no doubt saved me some points over the years.
Useful gadget the speed limit alarm... Unfortunately the only driver aids/electrickery in the TVR are the windows

TVR V8 Cerbera one of my dream Cars.
TVR Tuscan another
Lotus Carlton another
Great choice there Welshbeef TVR Tuscan another
Lotus Carlton another
Can't speak for the Lotus Carlton, not been in one, but the Cerb and Tuscan are great 'proper' driving/drivers cars... My Chim is far from standard and an absolute hoot to drive, I track it too, but a couple of years back I passenger'd in a 4.7 Cerb (rebuilt 4.5) with 470bhp around Snetterton, feck me that thing was quick, just kept pulling... get one if you can, it'll challenge your driving prowess but you'll enjoy every second of it...........

If you’re looking to avoid a ban then a poor strategy has been adopted. This case should have been dealt with by post. My court date for a speeding offence last June has finally come around. 86/60 is most likely 5 points. It could be 3-6 points or a ban of any length (but not usually over 28 days at that speed).
There’s also a fine, surcharge (10% of the fine) and prosecution costs (usually £85-£100).
Assuming this isn’t a motorway offence then to determine the fine, calculate your net weekly income ("N"). If N is greater than £1000 then N=1000. The most likely fine is N x ⅔ and the sentencing range is N x ½ to N x ⅚.
You'll get 4-5 points I reckon, I only got 6 for 105-110 on the M25 a few years back....
The fine salary range above is correct but remember that it's a net weekly income number.....a 1 off pension contribution/cycle to work/childcare voucher can save you hundreds, saved me ~£600 without breaking the law

7-28 day ban or 4-6 points is the current guideline for that speed. Band B fine - 75% to 125% of weekly income. Early guilty plea and previous record are in your favour. If there are any aggravating factors e.g. poor road conditions then that will go against you.
You missed the credit bit. When I got caught back in 2011 (107 in a 70) they never asked me what my income was... no ban... no means test... no speed awareness course... was I just really lucky or have things changed
ETA:
Oh, hang on, I was in the TVR..... British icon so probably exempt
