New speeding laws for 1mph over
Discussion
Chief Constable of West Mercia (that has a good track record of collecting fines during roadworks on the M5), says penalise people for driving at 1mph over the limit

Trouble is there are also rules for setting speed limits, and local authorities by and large ignore them
Should there be penalties for that too?

Of course speeding is dangerous,
MP has better handle on itTory MP Sir Greg Knight warned a zero tolerance approach would 'make criminals of good drivers'.
Here in Victoria Australia we have a 3kph (2mph) tolerance and it sucks. I have been fined (about GBP100 and 1 demerit point per time) on a number of occasions for being less that 5kph (3mph) over. People start driving around spending more time looking at their speedometer than where they are going.....and that’s supposed to be safer??!!
It’s revenue raising pure and simple. It has NOTHING to do with safety.

So who's speedo is calibrated? Which make of car has a speedo that the manufacturer guarantees to be totally accurate. Could you then sue the manufacturer for selling faulty goods? They'd love that. Potential class actions against all car makers!
This idiot is just a headline grabber, wants his picture in the paper. So they 'catch' thousands of drivers going 1mph over the limit and ticket them. All those drivers elect to go to court, system is swamped, cases thrown out and costs awarded. Total breakdown in a short time, all down to this idiot!
Yes, I know this is taking it to the extreme but he started it! Deserves to be back on the beat the Tw*t!!

Victorian speed limits suck. I’ve resorted to sticking it on cruise everywhere (even in the 60kmh areas) after racking up 5 fines for doing less than 5kmh over the limitIt’s revenue raising pure and simple. It has NOTHING to do with safety.

They all are. Can read 10% more than actual speed, but not allowed to read under. So at 100mph indicated your speed will be 90-100mph.
Only a speedo with 100% accuracy is of any use and you've admitted they can read 10% or any figure up to 10% more.
That's not calibrated for accuracy.

What will it be reading at 70mph? 75 - 77 - 80? How is that of any use if there's zero tolerance?

No silly. Only a speedo with 100% accuracy is of any use and you've admitted they can read 10% or any figure up to 10% more.

No speedo reads ABOVE the limit they all under read.
So to likely get nipped in a 70mph for most Cars you might have to hit maybe 85-90mph on the speedo.
Anyway If you only ever drive with the speedo showing he limit you will never be nipped for speeding period.
I don't necessarily have a problem with greater enforcement of speed limits, if those speed limits are appropriate, and in most cases they are not. You can't fine someone for doing 71 on an empty motorway in good visabilty.
I get the impression most actually limits are artificially low on the basis they know most will exceed them slightly.
Secondly, they shouldnt be focussing on this until they have mobile phone use, drink/drunk driving under control, and they clearly haven't.

I once heard a Chief Constable from some Outinthestickshire on R4 genuinely proposing the the law should be changed to require all courts to accept written evidence given by policemen as true and accurate without cross examination, his argument being that it would save loadsamoney if his officers didn't have to waste their time going to court to explain to the jury why the scum perp is guilty.
He couldn't see any weakness in his argument. My point? Being bright isn't one of the job requirements to be CC.
