All over the press and the always accurate Facebook...

I’m dubious as to whether this news is accurate. Any idea? Anyone?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's true, just another easy way to get more cash from the drivers.

Yet I know I've gone over 70 on that stretch (but probably not over 80/85) and heard nothing....

The government have spent all that money upgrading to so called "smart motorways"

Hardly surprising they'll now fleece the motorist for every penny they can.

But of course, if you don't want a fine it's easy, stick to the speed limit.

I read a boast where one camera had caught 8000 motorists. Multiply that by the number of cameras in the UK and it would be interesting to see how they'd deal with the problem if everybody pleading not guilty.

This has always been the case with smart motorways hasn't it? When I was regularly using the M25 everyone slowed down to around 75mph under the gantries because it was common knowledge that the cameras could be active even when no variable limits were displayed.

The article doesn't mention camera tolerance or ACPO guidelines, so I'd assume you'd still have to going 79mph+ to actually receive a ticket.

How to exceed the speed limit on the M25 101:
Drive fast. Upon sighting a gantry;
1. Is it mentioned by camsam / waze / app of choice? -> Yes = Slow
2. Can you see a HADECS on the side of the gantry? -> Yes = Slow
3. Mirror check, Tailgater? If no, continue fast
4. Close to gantry, calibration lines? -> If yes and 3 = no, slam on

“Calibration lines”!

None required these are either being burnt off or not being replaced after resurfacing.

I've noticed that - They've kindly made the HADECS visible on the side of the gantry - I've seen a fair few without, and some with - Still a reasonable safety measure!

I wonder, why has the requirement for calibration lines been removed? Do hadecs have multiple measurements? Guess so - haven't researched recently though.
