Not sure this is the correct place so please move if required.

Child 17, just passed test. I want to get a dash cam in the car as a precaution.

Firstly, can you get and are you allowed to have forward & rearward facing cams?

And does anyone have any recommendations? I bought a forward facing one that sticks on the windscreen for £40 but it falls off after about two minutes so given up with that one.

Thanks in advance

In the UK they can be fitted and used with no problems regarding the law.

edit to add - as long as the driver's forward/rearward views are not obscured

We got a nextbase for £90. Might be less now. Can’t fault it.

Why would you want to get a 17 y/o a dashcam? Any accident if far more likely to be his fault than the other party. If it's a serious accident, the SD card can be confiscated by the police at the scene. And the evidence on it can be used against him.

But it may not be his fault.

Worth having.

Also having a camera that's checked periodically probably means they won't be such knobs.

I guess your child might drive differently if they know the footage was being reviewed.

If the dashcam keeps mysteriously getting unplugged, then your kid may well not be the innocent driver you think they are...

Were any of us innocent at that age?

She has a black box and gets weekly emails telling us % of night driving and speeding so I'm not worried she will be stupid.

And I already appreciate if she has an accident there is the likelihood she could be at fault and it will incriminate her but I am also aware that a 'crash for cash' type of individual may target a young driver and especially seeing a girl behind the wheel of a mini and that is more my worry.
