wasn't sure what section to put this in but it is plod related..

I've seen a variaty of performance police cars on TV, most notably:

WRX
EVO
Mark5 Golf R32
Insignia VXR
Audi S3

i think they must have prevented a fair few dangerous chases just with their 'credentials' - surely it would be cheaper/safer to have a few of these for each force with the assumption the majority of tag sporting scroats wouldn't bother trying to outrun an EVO X in their freshly stolen Audi A4 than have someone check their (Stolen) rear view, see a diesel hyundai with its front grill lit up with blue strobes and decide they'll prob be able to lose it.

I know there has been some extreme cost cutting across various forces but are any of these still run anywhere? if so, what are their use now?

Years ago Northumbria had a small number of Escort Cosworths. Couple got nicked and they disappeared off the streets after that.

Couple of Golf Gti's floating around and some octavia vrs and some other forces have Focus ST and Audi S3

Hampshire and Thames Valley constabularies use BMW 330d's which are apparently faster than a Lambo according to their owners.

I've seen a few X5's and XC90's which aren't cheap vehicles either.

However with the low number of car chases in the UK and a policy of interception or surveillance over pursuit, its rather pointless to have them when we could have two Astra Diesels for GD's for the same cost.

330D X Drive seems to be the weapon of choice these days. There's not many normal cars going to out run one of those and I'd imagine they're more reliable than a Scooby.

There is always an exception obviously but..

I don't think there as many actual Police pursuits these days due to:

Cars being knicked with coded keys, scanners and other clever trickery meaning they often aren't reported until they're long gone.

There are far fewer police about to stumble upon a stolen car which then does a runner.

Higher end/ faster stuff,I imagine, is stolen by more professional types who are less likely to find themselves in a chase. (Cloned plates etc)

The scrotes who are more likely to find themselves in a chase are opotunist types and more likely to be in an average car which a trained copper in a T5/ BLE will have no probs catching.

All this means there is less need for high maintenance cars like Scoobys, Evos etc

My thoughts smile

Wrong. There are plenty of pursuits. These days a 330D is just as fast and more reliable than an old scooby or evo. Plus they're half the cost on Police deals.

Our Escort Cosworths were targeted, rammed and written off in a short space of time.

The helicopter was fire-bombed too (and remained the subject of attacks for many years).

Not sure about them being faster than Lambos!! biggrin

I was stopped whilst driving a MK7 Golf R by a Metropolitan Police Traffic Car (330D or 335D not sure what they use these days.) They followed me for about 10 minutes before finally pulling me. He thanked me for stopping as he said if I had failed to stop they wouldn't have caught up hence the long following distance whilst they checked what else was in the area.

Not being funny, but I hardly ever see a marked/liveried Police car on the road these days unless I'm in Zone 1 or 2 in London. Whenever I do I'm always surprised and it's usually a bog standard Ford Focus.

I know that Surrey & Sussex share some unmarked BMW's and theres a blue S3 floating around.

GMP have a few diesel Corsa Ds.

If that's not a deterrent I don't know what is.

My Uncle is an officer in Surrey/Sussex (so few police around he covers all the way from Chichester to Gatwick!)

Popped in for tea once in a Sepang Blue 65 reg S3 Saloon unmarked. He even took me out for a quick spin in it! This was back in 2016, he is very upset at the moment as they have replaced his lovely S3 with an A6 3.0TDI Estate... frown

I can see it now:

"In order to better pursue commonly stolen vehicles, we decided last year to purchase a Golf R for use by our vehicle crimes division"
"Did you? No one has ever seen it at a crime scene"
"Yeah, some bugger nicked it in the first week"

335d with M-Sport extras and a decent remap - can be quite scary for a sooter.

Anyway yet to see a car that's quicker than a radio and the chopper coppers nearly always get their man

Just plan your criminal endeavours around a bit of drizzle, a slight breeze or any clouds on the horizon.

Or use a moped.

Or just rely on one helicopter covering half the country.

Or plan your getaway route to go through restricted airspace ?

back in the days of my misspent youth (around 6 months ago) i remember being told by the driver of an unmarked Focus ST on a dark and very wet evening.. "if we had been able to catch you we would have done you for speeding too"

Do they force you to drive one home if they catch you being naughty?
