Posting on behalf of my brother. No, really. It isn`t me!

He has (had) insurance with a well known insurer, adverts currently involve a lady wearing a large naval hat.

Apparently in mid Jan he added business usage to his existing car insurance policy. This cost him GBP60.

He was pulled over today by the Police and informed that he was driving without insurance. He will get a summons and likely 6 points on his license.

Upon calling the insurers, they took the payment on a card on file which had then passed its expiry date and of course, it bounced. Insurance was cancelled on the 8th of Feb. They claim to have sent him registered mail on more than one occasion, but same has not been received. When asked why they didn`t call him, their response was something along the lines of `we have millions of customers and don`t have time`.

I did ask why he didn`t get an email from them, and he now sheepishly says that he has since found them in his junk folder... fool. Anyhow.

The question is, why was his insurance cancelled outright, leaving him uninsured, instead of reverting to the original non-business use policy. Surely that is irresponsible on the insurers part?

I`ll talk to him later to see what kind of notices (how many days) he was given by them in their various messages. They also claim that recorded post was sent and not returned. He claims not to have received...

So, verisimilitude of bros excuses aside, any thoughts on the outright cancellation instead of reversion?

Cheers

Matt

Because then he would also have no insurance if he was using the vehicle for business without business cover.

I assume your bro has a valid insurance certificate from before putting the business usage on, which was paid for in full and hasn’t been refunded? And you bro wasn’t on business?

If the insurance was cancelled then there should be some form of refund? If not then I would say you were covered. If refunded, emails sent and letter sent then I suspect you are fighting a losing battle.

Tricky sounds like a route for the official complaint and then onto the Financial Ombudsman Service - he doesn't have much to lose by going this route.

£60 for business cover! Really? I’ve never paid a penny for it.

As said above I can’t see how they’ve cancelled the full policy unless he’s got a refund from the original policy.

What if he was paying for it monthly?

...on the expired card that was refused...

Would there have been a card on file in that case?

So who signed for it?

Do they really send stuff out recorded? LV= seem unable to deal with credit cards that expire and when they write it's never by recorded delivery.

Insurance companies use direct debits, not continuous switch transactions so that would be a non issue.

It will either be a cock up, in which case he will be fine or it's jackanory, in which case he will be fined.

Fair point on the monthly payment. I thought I read that it was paid in full for the year, but clearly my mistake.

There’s a month and a fair few bits of post needed to cancel it, so quite amassed that none of these made it to the OP’s brother. Given he’s financially astute enough to add this cover mid-term it’s bizarre that he’d use a card that’s about to expire. My new card tends to arrive a few months before the old one arrives and I decide when to move to the new card. Even more bizarre, is not noticing that it hasn’t gone out.

When I have had to ring insurance company to amend my policy and pay extra

They have always asked how would you like to pay ?
Would you like us to take the payment from the credit / debit card on file ?
Yes please I tell them, they then ask can you confirm the last 4 digits we have on record are e.g 1111 is that still valid ?

If my card has changed I say no I have a new card number etc.

Somebody somewhere made a big mistake in this case
Probably the guy who had an email in junk folder and ignored it
His fault I assume ?

Looks like a £19.50 charge to me £40.50 for business use seems excessive.

Why does everyone who seems to have insurance cancelled etc never seem to get the various letters that are sent out

Daughter got hers from LV - normal post, but it arrived OK. They were writing to say the policy had ended - that was because they'd set it up for the previous year!

Funnily enough same daughter added business cover to her Admiral policy mid-term - the premium went down £15 and they sent her a refund.

Post is an odd - I used to scoff at such comments but our post in a little village has gone very iffy - frequent post coming to us that isn't ours and people bring post to us that has been delivered to them by mistake. Plus of course unless you're waiting for a letter you generally don't know what you don't get.

Because when you move house you can only setup mail forwarding for real people, not imaginary friends.

They say they sent me ONE which I never received
Not recorded delivery, just a regular letter

No email
No phone
No text
No mobile call

Nothing, even though they had used some of the above for marketing over the 10y or so Id been with them

I still dont know why the renewal didnt go through, I spoke to them on the phone to quibble a minor point at anniversary time and was told theyd process it as usual and have never had an explanation

All I know is I was fortunate to be pulled by a patient traffic cop shortly afterwards who let me take out a policy at the roadside then gave me an IN10

So there you go - it happened to me and I too would like to know why I didnt get the bloody letter

It would be handy if askMID had an automated service to tell you when any of your cars' insurance lapse. I check manually from time to time but it's a bit haphazard.
