My car went in for recall to replace the auxiliary tensioner. The work involved drilling the block, making mods such that a mechanical tensioner could be fitted. 6 weeks and less than 1000 miles later the bolt holding the tensioner sheared off (suspect over tightened). Luckily it didn't take out the engine.

The car is back at the dealership (has been for a week) . So far they say they are waiting for the manufacturer to tell them what to do. In the meantime I have no car and no way to get to work (I can for a limited time work from home). They have no courtesy car I can use and have offered nothing else other than suggesting I hire a car (at my expense). No timescale has been given on when it might be repaired. Given it looks like it was something they did do I have a claim for alternative transportation or is it tough, wait it out?

Can you not contact the head office of the manufacturer and speak to someone about a hire car ?

Yep - failure directly attributable to bodged recall = their moral obligation at the very least.

Call to Head Office, pointing out the dealer's initial incompetence and now unhelpful attitude.

Or, if you want to play the game, an initial call to the dealer principal to give him an opportunity to resolve this before you go to head office...
