Never used the m62 before but over the weekend I was coming west.

I went under a solid concrete gantry and saw the white lines on the floor in front of me.

I went over the lines at about 82mph as a best guess.

I looked in the mirror and each of the four lanes had what looked like a big grey box over it covering the gantry. It kind of looked like your standard gatso box. I didn't see a flash but it was daylight and I'm guessing they don't flash.

Did I get caught or is there any chance the speed will save me, or even if these cameras work?

I checked every gantry after it (but all the others were metal gantries you could see through) and none of them had these grey boxes attached.

On a related note, variable and average speed cameras make motorways so dangerous it's untrue.

I came through an average 4 lane 50mph limit. I had a heavy 20ft behind me. Another heavy 1ft away along my side and a car 15 ft in front and another to the side with everyone glued to their speedo. Dangerous is an understatement.

Even in the daylight you'd see the flash - you're likely ok

Why does that make it "so dangerous"? As I seem to spend half of my time on motorways with reduced speed limits why is it any more dangerous than those without?

If that was heading towards Liverpool, just at the end of the M62, that 50 limit has three countdown markers, and is very much active. It was much less well signposted before, and if I recall was a 60 then a 40 with a speed camera. Now it is a 50 with three countdown markers, then a 40, then a dead stop at traffic lights.

This. I've seen people get flashed by those on the M62.

Safe driving tip. Do not drive ('cruise') alongside any vehicle, particularly a lorry or coach. Fairly simple, really. Even I manage it.

Because potentially 40 tonnes of metal and other materials glued to your ass might end up with you being flat.

Since you guys want some research and numbers, there was a "research" recently which seems to say that drivers feel more aware and comfortable at 60 mph in roadworks rather than 50mph.

Well most seem to drive nearer 60mph (probabably ar 50 + 10% plus 2)

Which potentially makes it less safe of course (familiarity breeds contempt and all that). Nothing suggests its actually safer in that.

Getting away with 10%+2 mph is not a hard fact, you are still breaking the law. It's a risk of SAC or 3 points that some are willing to take. So the ones that don't want that risk will stick to 50 with their eyes glued to the speedometer (not every car has cruise control) and something bigger glued to their rear bumper.

A comfortable driver who is able to assess everything around them better and be more aware is a safer driver to me than the one who is not. Just my opinion ofcourse. Continue to drive slower if you wish and if that makes you a better driver.

I have seen these cameras flashed on a cloudy day and you could tell when it went off, atleast from when you're behind the flash. If you didn't see or notice any flashes then I think you should be fine.

It's not a fact at all. +10% + 2 is the prosecution threshold. You are likely to 'get away with' +10% + 1.

No, I dont think so. I seem to recall it was quite a built up area, it would have been round about junction 23-26 I think. I cant find it again on google maps.

This is the type of camera, but mounted on the back of a brown concrete overpass, so you cant see through like you can the tubular metal gantry ones.
